Today in 1847, Liberia declared independence from the USA. #RxHistory⌛ On 26 July 1847, the Republic of Liberia, a colony of the American Colonization Society (ACS) on the west coast of Africa, proclaimed its independence, making Liberia the first modern republic in Africa. The constitution of the newly independent Liberia was an adaptation of the United State of America's constitution and Joseph Jenkins Roberts became Liberia’s first elected president in 1948. In 1821, Liberia was founded by the ACS in an attempt to relocate former enslaved African-Americans back to Africa. While abolitionists argued that the extraction of slaves from the United States was discriminatory and some African-Americans were reluctant to leave their American homes, around 15,000 African-Americans settled in Liberia between the establishment of Liberia and the mid-1800s. Liberia assisted Britain in its abolition of slave trade in Africa. Liberia wasn’t diplomatically recognized by the United States until 1862 but the United States helped the west African country maintain its independence through the 20th century scramble for Africa. How to End War and Conflict: In November 1995, former U.S. President Bill Clinton visited Northern Ireland, where he learned of a bold plan to end decades of conflict on the island. This plan involved removing the border with the Republic of Ireland, allowing unrestricted travel, religious freedom, language choice, trade, and openly displaying flags whether orange or green.  This proposal was incorporated into the Good Friday Agreement, which received overwhelming support in referendums and contributed to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in 1998. Similarly, the European Union was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012 for eliminating internal borders, ending centuries of war. It is inconceivable that the EU's 500 million people, including Muslims, Jews, Christians, and others, would go to war with one another. Similarly, it is unthinkable for U.S. states to engage in conflict between themselves for the same reason.
