Yves Chenal traces the evolution of diplomacy from its ancient origins to the modern era, emphasizing its role as a tool for maintaining peace through balance. He begins by highlighting that diplomacy emerged in the 3rd millennium BCE, with early examples like the peace treaty between Lagash and Uruk in 2400 BCE. Throughout history, diplomacy has sought to resolve conflicts and promote stability, with the Congress of Vienna in 1815 serving as a prime example of balancing power among states. Chenal explores the foundations of diplomatic practices, such as the importance of ambassadorial inviolability, rooted in Roman law, and the dynastic nature of medieval diplomacy, where marriage alliances were often used to settle disputes. The article also delves into the origins of multilateral diplomacy during the Middle Ages, showcasing congresses like Arras in 1435, which established the foundation for modern diplomatic procedures. By the end of the Middle Ages, diplomacy had become professionalized, with permanent embassies and figures like Peter Paul Rubens and Hugo Grotius playing pivotal roles in shaping its development. Chenal illustrates how 19th-century European diplomacy, particularly after the Congress of Vienna, maintained peace through a balance of power. However, the 20th century saw a shift toward exclusionary peacemaking, especially after the World Wars. He concludes by reflecting on modern diplomacy, which, though faster and more efficient, faces challenges in a decentralized global context centered around institutions like the UN. Once the primary forum for conflict resolution, the UN now struggles to maintain influence amid rising global tensions, as highlighted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This conflict exposes the limitations of traditional diplomatic mechanisms in curbing aggression and underscores the fragmented nature of modern power dynamics. In the 21st century, diplomacy remains essential, but it must adapt to a more fragmented balance of power. New global players like China and India are gaining prominence, and the rise of digital diplomacy and non-state actors adds complexity to international relations. To address conflicts and maintain peace in this evolving environment, diplomacy must innovate, particularly as cyber threats continue to reshape geopolitical landscapes. #sundaysofhistory #diplomacy #geopolitics #balanceofpower #internationalrelations #historyofdiplomacy #multilateralism #europe #china #india #nosstatecators #cyberthreats #globaldiplomacy #digitaldiplomacy #nonstateactors Herodote.net @Yves Chenal

Home Schooling..Learning French and History ..the relationship of various French Presidents to Russia and Putin..and the shifts in Policy..after the Russian occupation of Crimea and clear will to reintegrate Ukraine into the Russian Realm..Sovietism, they call it..Make Russia great again..lol On the other hand, from Chirac, to Sarkozy to Hollande , then Macron..the shift in policy also mirrors the impact of Russia s Presence in Africa..starting with Syria, and then helping colonies free themselves from France with Russian Covert and overt support (Niger, Mali, Senegal, Gabon..etc). So this impacted Frances Pocketbook, hence the shift in their eyes as Russia as a predator...threatening the French hegemony there. https://lnkd.in/ekJvMZJR

The recent visit of Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhaïl Bogdanov, to #Dakar underscores a significant moment in Senegal's diplomatic engagements. This development is pivotal as it positions #Dakar as a key platform for Russia's strategic expansion in #Africa, particularly through the newly launched Africa, Russia, and Eurasia Chamber of Commerce and Investment. This initiative is designed to deepen the economic and diplomatic ties between #Russia and #Senegal, turning Senegal into an essential commercial and #diplomatic hub on the continent. While the #expansion of Russia's diplomatic efforts in Africa is notable, with trade #partnerships aimed at enhancing economic ties, it is crucial for African nations, including Senegal, to navigate these relationships carefully. The reality remains that Russia accounts for less than 1% of #ForeignDirectInvestment in Africa, with trade figures significantly trailing behind Africa's exchanges with the #EuropeanUnion, #China, and the #UnitedStates. This disparity highlights the need for African countries to manage their international relationships #strategically, ensuring they align with their national interests and development agendas. The Wake Dialogue, an initiative founded to empower African #narratives and foster #selfdetermination, emphasizes the importance of African nations owning their #stories and #economic futures. In the face of growing international #influence, it is imperative that Africa's interactions on the global stage are conducted in a manner that prioritizes the continent's long-term interests over short-term gains. As we observe these unfolding geopolitical dynamics, The Wake Dialogue remains committed to advocating for a #narrative that champions African #autonomy. We encourage African leaders and policymakers to engage with all partners from a position of #strength, ensuring that any cooperation is mutually beneficial and respects the #sovereignty of African states. As we continue to monitor these developments, let us remember the importance of maintaining the #integrity of our #economic and #political narratives and ensuring that Africa's partnerships on the global stage are shaped by informed, strategic decision-making. #TheWakeDialogue #Senegal #RussiaAfrica #Geopolitics #AfricanSovereignty

"The ethical conduct by powerful nations and those who defend democracy and human rights as their core values matters. Validating blatant violations of human rights give a signal to all other actors that violence is legitimate not just in self defence but in retaliation and vengeance... We are generating an unprecedented level of anger and desire for violence and retaliation, and the consequences will not be localized. It also kills the credibility of the discourse on human rights and equal value of human lives... The African continent has continued to pay a huge price to war, violence and instability. Again, there are multiple factors including failures to build political institutions which make sense for their citizens. But the task was very difficult after a century and a half of various forms of colonization and domination by external European powers. Colonial and postcolonial histories and prolonged influence of external powers are still very much part of the determinants of the current political, economic and social structures of most African countries." Full debate at The Maison française de New York in last February with perspectives from different parts of the world on current worrying trends. Sous-titrage en français. #war #peace #africa #

Former Pakistani athlete and sports commentator, Sahiba Shah, has suggested that "javelin diplomacy" could help improve relations between Pakistan and India. She proposed a friendly javelin-throwing competition between athletes from both nations to foster goodwill and friendship. Shah believes that sports diplomacy can bridge the gap between the two countries, which have had strained relations for decades. By engaging in a friendly competition, Pakistani and Indian athletes can build connections and promote mutual understanding. The idea of "javelin diplomacy" gained traction after Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem won gold at the Commonwealth Games, beating Indian rival Neeraj Chopra. Shah sees this as an opportunity to leverage sports to build bridges between the two nations. By embracing "javelin diplomacy," Pakistan and India can take a step towards peace and friendship, using sports as a common language to bring people together and promote harmony. . . . #JavelinDiplomacy #SportsForPeace #PakIndiaFriendship #AthletesForHarmony #SouthAsiaUnity #tribunetrends
