There are many myths about protein in #India, emanating from sub-optimal understanding of nutrition biology. The first myth is that Indians are #protein deficient. However, an analysis of NSS household food intakes showed that the risk of protein deficiency (adjusted for digestible quality) in India was low in adults and non-existent at younger ages. There is another myth that protein is the critical limiting factor for physical growth in infants and children. It is time to rationalise the claims around rampant protein deficiency in India: we certainly need good protein, but in moderation, natural plant or animal foods have enough. Rely on farms, not pharmacies, for good #health. ✍ Anura Kurpad & Harshpal Singh Sachdev Read here: https://newsth.live/GYzrjq

“Akka, sari-a? Chudidhar-a?” Call out salespersons on a brisk morning as I weave my way through the narrow Uppukinar Lane. Most textile shops located in the maze of streets of the neighbourhood have displayed their grandest products out front, and I give them a pass: no, I will not be able to buy anything there with my shoestring budget. Join MetroPlus on the ₹1,000 challenge: will we be able to come back with a good haul for the amount from Coimbatore's shopping hub, Oppanakara Street? - Akila Kannadasan ✍ Read here: https://newsth.live/cG2YNg

The calm waters of Pirappanvalasai Beach along the Palk Strait usually scream shades of azure under the unforgiving afternoon sun. On one afternoon in September, this stretch of white sand along the bay, saw a group of spectators snug under a tent, breaking into loud cheers. They were here from villages in and around Rameswaram, to show support in numbers as young stand up paddlers from the neighbourhood participated in the Palkbay SUP Challenge 2024. For those of us who are not used to the pristine blues and whites of the south-eastern coast, the challenge was a sight to behold. The waters were dotted by white and orange buoys and floats, markers of distance for a technical Stand Up Paddle race. The third national edition, which saw 120 participants from around the country, stretched SUP’s possibilities of becoming the ‘next big thing’ in water sports. - Gowri S ✍ Read here: https://newsth.live/kkx386

Come September and it’s Venice for me. No matter how many times I have seen the Regata Storica, I am captivated by it every single time. Held every year in Venice, it celebrates the oldest traditions of the Venetian Republic; traditional rowing. Long before Venice became a part of Italy, this festival was a way of encouraging gondoliers to preserve their skill. Then, when Venice became a part of Italy, it became a way of celebrating the culture and traditions of the Venetians. But, let me take you back in time. The history is interesting. Although regattas were being held as early as the 13th century, it gained recognition only in 1899. Credit for this goes to Count Filippo Grimani, the Mayor of Venice, who gave it the name Regata Storica. The regatta consists of various races with different kinds of boats. Initially, they included galleys, peatoni and barges. Lighter boats that were rowed by two or more oarsmen were also used. Sadly, today, fewer varieties of boats are used. But, on the plus side, there are now categories for women and children. - Nimi Kurian ✍ Read here: https://newsth.live/E74GjE

#Opinion | India’s rapid trade growth is planned around containerized transport of goods. But there’s a key logistical bottleneck. India just does not make enough containers. The container can be seamlessly multimodal – rail, ship and road. It has revolutionized world trade by rapidly cutting transportation time, port delays and so on. It can be said that the untold story of swift trade movements that have enabled globalization is actually the containerization of goods. Container boxes are highly standardized in dimensions and cargo-carrying capacities. Once the cargo is stuffed inside the container and sealed after Customs clearance, the boxes can be moved over long distances without any disturbance to the cargo. - N Bhanu Prakash ✍ Read here: https://newsth.live/w6wg70
