What happens when patients lack access primary care? A new study looking at the impacts of living in primary care shortage areas showed higher rates of emergency surgery, serious complications, and hospital readmissions. Those in areas with the most severe shortages were also more likely to have serious complications. But it doesn't have to be this way. Pennsylvania can take action to prevent higher rates of emergency surgery and complications by increasing patient access to primary care. Full practice authority for nurse practitioners through SB25 and HB1825 would allow NPs to open clinics and provide care to patients living in primary care shortage areas, which would improve patient health across Pennsylvania and in its underserved communities. Tell PA legislators that Pennsylvanians deserve access to safe, quality primary care services - join PCNP and NPs from across Pennsylvania in Harrisburg on April 30 to advocate for full practice authority! Patients more likely to be admitted to critical care after surgery if a bed is available, according to new study led by UCL and UCLH researchers. The study sought to shed light on how hospital patients are prioritised for postoperative care and what impact that has on their health. Professor Ramani Moonesinghe, National Clinical Director for Critical and Perioperative Care at NHS England, and who holds posts at UCL and UCLH (pictured top), said: “The fact that bed capacity impacts on clinical decision making and subsequent patient care is proof of unfairness in the provision of postoperative care and has relevance for policymakers and health service commissioners when considering critical care capacity." 📈 The latest data from #NHS England indicates that the overall waiting list increased by around 30,000 to 7.6 million during May, with a slightly larger proportion of individual patients than April with 6.4 million. Of that number, 308,000 were waiting more than 52 weeks; 56,000 were waiting more than 65 weeks; 5,000 were waiting more than 78 weeks; and 259 were waiting more than 104 weeks. Only 59% of patients waited fewer than 18 weeks — significantly short of the 92% standard. Ambulatory Surgical Centers represent the future of medical care. As we increase the number and capacity of these centers, we will be able to serve a greater number of patients. Not only does this expansion allow for treating more individuals, but it also ensures that care is delivered in a manner that is both safe and cost-effective. The focus on specialized surgical procedures, typically not requiring an overnight hospital stay, enhances patient convenience and reduces healthcare costs. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the growth of these surgery centers. How do you see their expansion impacting healthcare delivery and patient experience? #hearthealth #heartdoctor #meded #heartdisease #heartdiseaseawareness #heartdiseaseprevention #cardiologist #healthylifestyle #healthyhabits #healthiswealth

I recently had my surgery consultation for my Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS) change at Banner MD Anderson with Dr Tomeh, and it was like walking into a different world. The immediate warmth and care felt like a welcome embrace—so refreshing compared to my past experiences. I’ll be honest: re-entering a Banner facility was daunting. My previous interactions with them were far from patient-centered. After filing a complaint for poor treatment, I received a dismissive letter that lacked any form of apology or accountability. It felt like neglect, not the care they preach. Yet at MD Anderson, I discovered a true culture of caring. Every person I encountered prioritized my well-being and took the time to listen and understand my concerns. It’s a stark reminder that not all Banner locations uphold the same principles of patient-centered care. 🚗 Sometimes, it’s not just about proximity; it’s about where you feel valued and treated with dignity. To anyone navigating their healthcare journey: don’t settle for less. Seek out environments that embrace compassion and commitment to patient care. You deserve it! #HealthCare #PatientExperience #VNS #BannerMDAnderson #CultureOfCaring #BannerHealth

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is an evidence-based protocol for perioperative care. It challenges the traditional approach, which often involves limited preoperative education, prolonged fasting, reliance on opioids for pain management, and delayed mobilization. ERAS emphasizes comprehensive patient education, nutritional support, prehabilitation, reduced fasting times with carbohydrate loading, multimodal analgesia, and early mobilization. Benefits of ERAS include fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, reduced readmissions, cost efficiency, and improved patient experience. Surgeons are encouraged to adopt ERAS for better surgical outcomes and healthcare quality. #doctors #patientsafety #healthcare #healthcarequality #eras

A true story of how our healthcare system is failing. While out of town this week, I've been supporting my wife after her major back surgery. However, this isn't the healthcare story I am sharing. Thats for another day. Earlier today, I was stopped by a gentleman while coming back to my hotel from a morning walk. He was curious about the CPT club I had with me, which I often take on the road. After some pleasantries, he shared with me that he and his wife have racked up a $40,000 hotel bill due to a botched knee replacement. His wife can no longer go up and down the stairs at home. As he shared his frustrations with the surgeon not being who he was promoted to be, I knew exactly what had happened. The surgeon has high marks on the network websites. That can be misleading. The true quality scores are in the CMS data base. The gentleman's wife has great coverage through the State of California and has literally no out-of-pocket costs for PCP and surgery. Instead of going on a tirade about the broken healthcare system and the lack of access and transparency to who are the best in class quality physicians I empathized with the gentleman and shared some of the new transparency solutions he can access right now to get better information and access to high-quality care. This is the short version of another true story where our HC system is failing individuals. Its doesnt have to be this way, everyone deserves access to quality care. #dpc #transparency #qualityhealthcare
