Businesses and financial institutions are uniting and calling on governments to provide the regulatory certainty they need to transform their operations and supply chains 🌱 This is our window to build a thriving, #NaturePositive, #NetZero and equitable economy. Businesses cannot address the challenge of nature and biodiversity loss alone and voluntary business action is not enough. The Business for Nature coalition has published five high-level recommendations and 20 detailed policy asks for governments to accelerate the action needed on #Nature. We joined climate leaders at Aspen Ideas Climate to drive forward solutions to the interconnected issues of climate and health. Co-hosting a roundtable discussion with the National Academy of Medicine, we brought together policymakers, academics, healthcare practitioners and community leaders to explore what enablers – from digital innovations to policy change – are needed to encourage action and impact at scale. Developing countries can take several steps to become more resilient to debt risks and safeguard funding for critical needs like healthcare and infrastructure: 1. **Transparent and Responsible Borrowing:** Developing countries should adopt responsible borrowing practices. This involves transparency in debt management, accurately assessing their debt-carrying capacity, and avoiding overindebtedness. 2. **Diversification of Funding Sources:** Relying on a single source of funding, especially if it's high-cost or risky, can lead to vulnerability. Countries should diversify their sources of funding, including seeking grants, concessional loans, and private-sector investments. 3. **Effective Debt Management:** Developing countries must establish effective debt management strategies. This includes careful monitoring of debt levels, terms, and maturities. Debt should be used for projects that generate economic returns and long-term sustainability. 4. **Strong Governance and Anti-Corruption Measures:** Corruption can exacerbate debt problems. Ensuring good governance, transparency, and anti-corruption measures can help prevent funds from being misappropriated and reduce the need for additional borrowing. 5. **Invest in Human Capital:** Investing in education and healthcare can lead to a more skilled and healthy workforce, which, in turn, can boost economic growth and reduce the need for external financing. 6. **Diversify the Economy:** Overreliance on a single industry or commodity can make a country susceptible to economic shocks. Diversifying the economy can create more stable revenue streams. 7. **Build Resilience to Shocks:** Developing countries should invest in disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and social safety nets. These measures can help reduce the economic impact of external shocks. 8. **International Assistance:** The international community can play a crucial role by providing debt relief, grants, and technical assistance to developing countries. Debt relief initiatives, like the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI), can provide temporary relief from debt service payments. 9. **Bilateral and Multilateral Agreements:** Negotiating favorable terms with creditors and engaging in multilateral agreements can help secure better debt conditions and access to funding. 10. **Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):** Aligning development efforts with the SDGs can attract international support and funding for projects that have a positive social and environmental impact. In summary, a combination of responsible financial management, diversified funding sources, strong governance, and investments in human capital and resilience can help developing countries become more resilient to debt risks while safeguarding critical funding for essential needs. International cooperation and support are also vital in this endeavor.
