In honor of #pridemonth2024 (continuing a trend that I started in 2022), I wanted to share some relevant financial and estate planning guidance throughout the month: 1. Review and update your beneficiary designations. When was the last time that you reviewed your qualified retirement plan and/or life insurance policy beneficiary designations? Do you know who is named as the primary and/or contingent beneficiary? Do you know who might receive these assets if you fail to designate a beneficiary? The default for many of these accounts is to your estate, which may be contrary to your wishes. While one of our staff members was out recently, they watched someone access a bathroom with a ramp, only to find the door too heavy for them to open in their wheelchair. Just a few days later, they saw the same thing, but this was simply to get the front door open. Even though there was accessible parking and a ramp to get to the the door. We wanted to share this with you all as a powerful reminder that accessibility isn't just about one feature, it's the whole experience. What are your thoughts? Disability comes in all shapes and sizes, each with its own set of challenges. But despite this diversity, the sad commonality witnessed all across the globe remains same, EXCLUSION. “I would want people with disabilities 20 years from now to not think that they’re broken. You know, not think that there’s anything spiritually or physically or emotionally wrong with them, you know, and not just people with disabilities, but queer people and gender nonconforming folks and people of color and all of the people I think that society really pushes down and out. And just to note, we’re still powerful.” ~Stacey Milburn, Disability Justice advocate and organizer Stacey Park Milbern was a queer disabled woman of color and an activist, writer, speaker, and movement organizer who helped strengthen and lead the modern Disability Justice movement. Her life and work was a reminder of the power of youth leadership to transform the world towards a more inclusive and just future for all. CIL’s youth programs support disabled young people in building community, advocating for disability rights and justice, and finding pathways to meaningful schooling, employment and community participation. Our Living Well program is a senior peer support program that offers coaching sessions and health education classes to give seniors the tools and support to break through new limitations, improve their quality of life, and maintain independence. In addition, the program advocates for the rights and needs of seniors as they age into disability. Young people will lead the way to a more just and inclusive future, and stand on the shoulders of elders who paved the way. Unless there is an increase in intentional, transparent anti-ableist practices from the sector, philanthropy’s aims to resource cross-movement work, minimize inequality for marginalized communities, and move equity forward will remain unfulfilled." Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and we renew our commitment to disability justice and call on our peers to continue to dismantle and root out ableism in the philanthropy sector. Ableism is a system of oppression that devalues and discriminates against people with disabilities. This article by Sandy Ho and Jen Bokoff, published last year in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, provides seven ideas for philanthropy to consider: 1. Remember that ableism doesn't exist in a vacuum. 2. Hire, support, and promote disabled talent. 3. Ensure that your grantmaking processes and technologies are accessible. 4. Be in active partnership with disability communities. 5. Build data about disability. 6. Proactively support disabled-led initiatives and organizations. 7. Call peers and stakeholders into learning and constant improvement.
