The Fresh Market team had an incredible time supporting the Juneteenth celebration in Tulsa, Oklahoma in Tulsa's historic Greenwood and Arts District! 🌟 The turnout was amazing, with the community coming together to honor this important day of freedom and resilience. Our team was on hand to provide water and some TFM surprises to guests while joining in the festivities. It was truly inspiring to see so many people come out to celebrate and connect. We spent the day yesterday with our staff and board evaluating and strategizing about our high-level misson, KPI's, and goals, and it felt only fitting to end the day on the eighth floor of the District 121 Building as the highest point in McKinney. Thankful to have a board and staff with great vision to see the future, hearts to strengthen the community, and hands to work out what strategic growth in McKinney can look like. We need to prioritize commercial affordability for Black businesses. Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative has been pounding the streets, listening to business owners and marrying stories with data. We cannot be the best place to do business by driving out the very anchors that have provided jobs and stability for long term Black residents. These businesses are also cultural architects and when we loose them, we loose part of our history and our identity. Displacement should NEVER be the price tag for development. Let’s make sure commercial affordability for Black businesses is a priority. Continue lifting up this issue Alex Camardelle, Ph.D.
Black-owned BUZZ Coffeehouse on Historic Cascade: closing. Black woman-owned Hodgepodge Coffeehouse on Moreland Ave: closing. Two places I’ve spent years sipping delicious coffee, completing big projects (including my dissertation), and building community announced they’ll be shutting down in the same week due to rent spikes. Our team at Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative has been tracking and hitting the pavement to listen to Black business owners facing displacement and one thing is clear: the displacement of Black-owned businesses is rendered nearly invisible in Atlanta policy discussions. We need better policy tools to preserve affordability for these vital community wealth building and job creating centers in our neighborhoods, but there are far fewer tools and investments in this area when compared to housing affordability. Moreso, there are more tools and policies in place to accelerate the displacement of these businesses than there are to stop it. We look forward to sharing more of what we’re learning. But this is unacceptable.

Norton Place, a supported living project for adults with learning difficulties, celebrated its 20th anniversary this week. Celebrations were held throughout the day with residents, staff, friends and family. Since opening its doors in 2004, it has been home to 10 residents, and is dedicated to enhancing their lives through a variety of activities and programs. The project helps residents engage with the community, pursue personal interests, and develop new skills whilst facilitating independent living.
