365 Fundraising Truisms #7 Good fundraisers paint a vivid picture of the future for their donors. Fundraising is uniquely about helping an organization accomplish priorities ahead. Much less important or compelling is helping an organization survive or giving to the memories of the past. 365 Fundraising Truisms #18 The ask itself is but one piece of a much larger puzzle that must be all put together with a prospective donor. The ask piece is important but is sometimes a piece that is overemphasized to the neglect of other pieces that play an equally critical role. 365 Fundraising Truisms #49 Giving to save a “sinking ship” is not a sustainable or an effective approach to fundraising. Giving to failing efforts isn’t nearly as attractive as giving to successful institutions, successful programs, and successful people. MONEY MAKES THE CHANGE GO ROUND Don’t ask, don’t get. This is the motivating, and educational TEDX message that Kara Logan Berlin shared at Santa Clara University. We were so happy to hear this message because Kara Logan Berlin encouraged us to skip past the ickiness of asking for money and to see it as an opportunity to do more work in an NGO! 1. Reconcile your personal relationship with money and your professional ask for money. There is a distinction between asking for yourself, and asking in pursuit of a bigger purpose. 2. Build Relationships. Do the work and do your homework. Interact with potential donors from their point of interest, what they care about, what they believe in, and also what they are already donating to. Find a midpoint between what you need and what they care for! Where possible, do it in person. 3. Make the ask. When you express your need (concisely). Ask donors “would you consider making xyz donation?” - don’t take the question back. And if you get rejected, just ask, “what would you consider?” Do you feel icky about asking for money? #Grantmaking #donations #NGO #fundraising Harvest | The Robin Hood Foundation | HARLEM RBI | Santa Clara University Watch more here:

365 Fundraising Truisms #40 Raising unrestricted dollars is often the most difficult to generate but is often the most necessary and important for the nonprofit given the flexibility it provides and the capacity to assist real and urgent needs. 365 Fundraising Truisms - #25 It’s often difficult for fundraisers to hit their goals. It’s even more challenging for teams of fundraisers to exceed their goals. The most difficult role is to be the manager of that team of fundraisers. Managing “down” isn’t always the strength for hard-charging, goal-oriented, fast-paced, no-nonsense, high-expectation people. And this is the way you’d often describe a lot of top performing front-line major gift officers. 365 Fundraising Truisms #19 Specific requests to prospective donors more often produce positive outcomes. These specific requests help create a vision in the mind of a prospective donor and help define the specific solution you propose to meet. Often the word “specific” is interpreted to mean a specific dollar amount. This can be true, but it can also be “specific” in terms of funding a well-defined opportunity, initiative, or item. Either way, prospective donors are often highly motivated by the specificity of a request. Visit www.5toolfundraiser.com #fundraising #fundraiser #nonprofit #nonprofits
