Happy Freedom Day! Today, we reflect on and celebrate African American freedom and culture. However, this day is also a reminder that there is still much progress to be made in addressing the injustices of racism. In the words of Angela Davis: "You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time." #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #Juneteenth2024

History lessons are so important to deconstruct Idelogies and beliefs held generationally. Colonisation and patriarchal constructs have dehumanized #Blackpeople for centuries. #PeopleofColour have consistently been captured, enslaved, stripped of their humility and have had to align with cultures outside of their own to fit it. When will it end😓😓 Repost from @african_stream • Human zoos in the West were a feature of colonialism. They fed a fascination for exotic lands and a grotesque pseudo-science that focussed on the physiology of so-called ‘savages’. Africans were exhibited in primitive settings for the enjoyment of spectators at trade fairs and travelling shows, helping legitimise the domination of ‘lesser’ beings by supposedly ‘superior’ Western civilisations. One famous ‘exhibit’ was Saartjie Baartman, who was also known as Sarah Bartmann. She was a South African woman who attracted crowds due to a genetic condition (steatopygia), resulting in a highly protruded posterior. She was shipped to London in 1810 and spent most of her life on display. In 2002, her remains were repatriated and buried in South Africa. Another infamous exhibition was unveiled at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels, Belgium. It featured Congolese people in their mocked-up ‘village’ at the venue. Awareness of the foul, dehumanising practice is slowly being raised. A Paris exhibition in 2011 called “Inventing the Savage” showed how human zoos laid the foundations for racism against Africans. It was the brainchild of the former French footballer, Liliane Thuram, whose Caribbean family suffered under slavery. Though human zoos do not exist anymore, the effects of colonisation and exploitation of coloured people persist to this day. That’s why we’ll keep posting about them. #Humanzoo #Europe #Colonialism #Savage #Africans #Exhibition #Fascinating #Exploitation #BlackPeople #Expo #Belgium #Caribbean Shaun Pascal Black Minds Matter UK African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Black Equity Organisation

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the end of slavery, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This pivotal moment liberated enslaved African Americans and symbolizes the end of one of the darkest chapters in our nation's past. Juneteenth honors the resilience, strength, and perseverance of African Americans throughout history. It's the longest-running African American holiday, commemorating freedom and justice for all. Let's celebrate Juneteenth not just with words, but with action. Let's strive for a future where freedom and equality are truly universal. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #EmancipationDay
