INDUSTRY NETWORKING: People Who Changed My Life Who have you met that changed your life, your career, even your very being? I met my list at AAPN events. For example: Rick Horwitch of Bureau Veritas Group has beat the sustainability drum for 14 years, ever since taking the lead at our Sustainability Summit in 2010.   He has never hesitated to serve on panels, to moderate them and in one case to invent the terrific AAPN Genius Panel of former AAPN presidents and chairmen in 2018. (Shown in the photo.).   Rick led one of the five supply chain breakout sessions at our AAPN Executive Forum in Cancun in 2013. He is very widely connected within the industry, and remains an important member of AAFA’s Board of Directors.    He was one of five AAPN members who called on AAPN member Walmart as an entire supply chain (also shown in the photo). In fact, Rick leads our commitment to Walmart’s Made in USA initiative today.    Logging up to 300,000 miles a year, Rick is one of our most global members. We have met him in events all over the world. In fact, in 2015 on our visit to Shanghai, Rick arranged for us to tour Bureau Veritas’ massive testing lab there.    The Change? Rick grew up on the factory floor of his parent’s apparel production facility. He knows operations. More importantly, he knows so many people and has taken the lead in networking us with them all over the world. I  remember that before Estée Lauder acquired Too Faced in 2016, the brand had revenues of approximately $270 million. The acquisition, valued at $1.45 billion, was the biggest at that time for Estée Lauder. By 2021, Too Faced’s annual revenue were nearly $500 million. 🤔 Two news articles that reflect 🇵🇱 Poland's economic development: “Levi Strauss & Co. closes factory in Poland after over three decades” and “Poland world’s second most popular service centre location among global firms”. 🛠️ Simple production is no longer profitable in Poland. Levi Strauss closes its factory in Plock and lays off 650 employees. Costs are rising and the factory is no longer competitive. 🧑🏻💼 On the other hand, Poland has become the TOP2 location worldwide for shared service centers. The advantages mentioned are: ✅access to qualified experts, ✅positive customer experiences, ✅being a member of the European Union. However, high-quality manufacturing is still competitive in Poland, especially compared to the high wages in Central and Western Europe. In the service sector, Poland is already ahead of Western Europe. How do you see the development in Poland? Is it a good thing that simple production sites are closing? I have found over my many years in retail as well as a former employee of Levi's that there is a distinct difference in the culture of retailers and suppliers. And we all know that "culture eats strategy for lunch. For an iconic brand like LS&Co. to once again try their hand at retail will be a massive undertaking and cannot be lead with proverbial "rose colored glasses". IMHO retailers can and do think vertically, however, this is not the same for many Manufacturers. Their organizations are just too hard wired in sourcing, quality suppliers and wholesale distribution. I wish LS&Co. tremendous success in this endeavor, however, if they do not flood their entire organization, with retail experts, and commit to serious change management at all execution layers they will struggle, once again, to reach the end consumer.
