Friends, today I want to share a deeply personal story - one of struggle, growth, and renewal. For the past two years, CSNP has been quiet, but that silence held profound meaning. It began with a simple question: "Who am I, really?" This led me down a path of intense self-reflection, battling #anxiety, #PTSD, and #depression. I stepped back from CSNP, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and healing. The key insight? As I rediscovered myself, I realized CyberSecurity NonProfit (CSNP) needed to rediscover its soul too. We've grown to nearly 12,000 members in 5 years - but our true strength lies in our people, our community. I was honoured to have anchored the CyberFriday as the Chief Cybergister for Cybergirls Alumni. We discussed two different articles and shared our ideas and perspectives. Trust me, We had a great session! ✨ Let me gist you on what we discussed on: The First Cyber article, 'New TunnelVision Attack Allows Hijacking of VPN Traffic via DHCP Manipulation'. So, have you ever thought about how secure your Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections really are? I mean, we all use them to protect our data and privacy, but what if I told you there's a new attack that can hijack your VPN traffic? Yeah, it's called TunnelVision. It tricks your VPN into routing your traffic through an attacker's server, making it look like you're securely connected, but really, your data is being intercepted. That's what this attack does! The researchers believe that TunnelVision affects all VPN applications when they're connected to a hostile network and that there are no ways to prevent such attacks except when the user's VPN runs on Linux or Android. So, "Why do you think it does not affect Android?" Android is not affected by this specific vulnerability (TunnelVision) because it does not support Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) option 121, which is the specific configuration option exploited in this attack. DHCP option 121 is used to configure classless static routes, and Android's DHCP client does not implement this option. However, it's important to note that Android is not completely immune to VPN-related vulnerabilities or other security issues. Android users need to keep their devices and VPN apps up-to-date with the latest security patches and updates to minimize potential risks. The Second Cyber Article, 'New Chrome Zero-Day Vulnerability CVE-2024-4761 Under Active Exploitation' Do you know Google just released an emergency update for Chrome to fix a new zero-day vulnerability that's already being exploited by hackers! The bug, known as CVE-2024-4761, affects the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine and could allow attackers to corrupt data, crash your browser, or even execute malicious code. Google has fixed six zero-day vulnerabilities in Chrome this year, and two of them in a short span of just a few days. To stay safe, make sure to update your Chrome browser to version 124.0.6367.207 or later for Windows and macOS, or version 124.0.6367.207 for Linux. And If you're using a Chromium-based browser like Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, or Vivaldi, keep an eye out for updates and apply them as soon as possible. As me and my family celebrate Eid al-Adha, I'm reminded of the deeper values we honor during this special time - reflection, sacrifice, and community. Known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," Eid al-Adha is all about making personal sacrifices for the greater good, a principle that truly resonates with me as a cybersecurity enthusiast. In cybersecurity, just like in life, we often make sacrifices to protect the larger community. The dedication to safeguarding information and building trust is at the heart of what we do. Eid al-Adha teaches us about commitment and integrity, values that are so important in the cybersecurity field. One way I can put it, is how the festival emphasises trust and dedication, much like how cybersecurity professionals work hard to create and maintain trust in our digital world. This means sacrificing personal time to stay on top of the latest threats, putting in the effort to prevent breaches, and ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of information. Reflecting on these values, I see how they influence my approach to cybersecurity. The commitment to continuous learning and the willingness to go the extra mile to secure systems are my ways of embodying the spirit of sacrifice that Eid al-Adha represents. Whether it’s staying up late to fix a vulnerability or spending weekends honing my skills, the dedication is always there. When taking on projects related to cybersecurity, I realise that the principles of sacrifice and trust are key to overcoming challenges and achieving success. These experiences reinforces my beliefs that these values are vital to my professional journey. Since becoming a parent, my passion and dedication to being part of the cyber protection of Australians in this generation and the next, has only ignited it even further. It has definitely become important to me to instill the values of cybersecurity in my children, ensuring their safety and awareness in our digital world, considering how young they get introduced to these devices with internet connection! This only drives me to integrate these values daily, ensuring that our digital spaces remain safe and secure for everyone. As we observe Eid al-Adha, let’s remember that the values of sacrifice, dedication, and trust extend beyond this festival and into all areas of our lives, including our careers.
