As a life long baseball fan, this article offers an interesting point. The MLB changed (again) the playoff qualification and format a few years ago. They made it easier to qualify for post season play by adding more wild card spots. At this point in the season there are about 20 teams within realistic contention. Great for fan interest in a long and grueling season. However, it has drastically shifted the trade deadline supply and demand paradigm. Now, fewer teams are willing to throw in the towel and trade away assets. Perhaps even more interesting, those teams that are hoping to beef up their roster for a post season push are having to package assets like never before in exchange for traditionally mediocre talent. In a sport where playoff droughts used to mean so much, I think simply contending or qualifying for the post season is enough for many franchises. Despite its somewhat diluted meaning now. Personally, I think many franchise front offices are quite content making the playoffs, holding on to their assets, hanging a banner, and selling the upside of the future to their fan bases.
