Recent data shows that the number of Hispanic adults who own firearms has increased more than 33% since 2017. And yet, despite over a quarter of Hispanic people in the U.S. owning a firearm, there has been a severe lack of information available for Hispanic gun owners on the importance of safe firearm storage. That’s why Brady: United Against Gun Violence, Casanova//McCann, and the Ad Council have partnered to launch the latest End Family Fire campaign: “Da El Siguiente Paso” or “Take the Next Step,” — the first national public education campaign on safe firearm storage created for the Hispanic community. 4.6 million kids live in homes with access to unlocked and loaded guns. By encouraging gun owners to store all of their firearms more securely, we can end family fire and save lives. Visit DaElSiguientePaso.org, or EndFamilyFire.org for more information on how to take the next step to store firearms more safely.

Gun rights and safety is a contentious topic for many Americans. Last night, PBS NewsHour aired a segment with Judy Woodruff featuring cross-partisan participants, the TN11, of a project Convergence worked on with Starts With Us, Citizen Solutions. Convergence and Starts with Us convened the TN11 to craft cross-partisan consensus solutions on gun rights and safety in Tennessee. The feature included clips from the convenings including some of Convergence’s CEO and President, Mariah Levison facilitating the session. In the segment, Judy Woodroof spoke with participants from both sides of the issue and uncovered the challenges they face around the consensus solutions they came up with when interacting with state legislators and their own communities. Participant Tim Carroll noted that, “I know that, if I start speaking out about this session and what I did, then I know that all of this could go away, right? If somebody says Tim Carroll is working with the anti-gun folks to try to come up with new laws, that’s all they will hear. And they will say, you know what, Tim Carroll, don’t go take classes with him, don’t listen to anything he says. I think that’s why I fought so hard during the solutions sessions to come up with things that didn’t infringe on our rights. But I know that will be misconstrued in the gun rights community.” Convergence applauds the efforts and courage of the TN11 who approached the conversations with empathy, thoughtfulness, and determination to make things better. Gun violence threatened to swamp America’s cities in the 1980s and ‘90s. But looking back, regulatory attempts to turn that tide may have unintentionally turbocharged the gun industry by radicalizing gun proponents. Earlier this month, I was on CNN International Commercial with Paula Newton to discuss the verdict in Jennifer Crumbley’s school shooting case. This verdict underscored that parents and gun owners have a crucial responsibility to prevent children and others from having access to unlocked and unsupervised firearms. A jury found that Crumbley’s actions led to the murders of 4 innocent lives. Unfortunately, in America, 65% of gun owners have at least one unlocked firearm, allowing children and others access to them, too often with deadly results. Irresponsible behaviors, like Crumbley’s, is why an astounding 76% of school shooters under the age of 18 get their guns from home. We must promote responsible gun ownership, which includes practicing safe firearm storage. A failure to do so only means more tragedies for more families. At Brady, we are leading the charge to promote responsible gun ownership by helping change American gun culture. Our #EndFamilyFire program promotes safe storage by encouraging gun owners to keep guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammo. Family fire incidents are shootings caused by someone having access to a gun from the home when they shouldn’t have it. According to an @AdCouncil study, gun owners who see our #EndFamilyFire ads are 5x more likely to seek info on safe storage, and nearly half begin storing their weapons more safely. That’s huge. It means countless lives saved. Finally, this verdict, borne out of tragedy, has the potential to do something truly powerful — bolster the national conversation. It is time we speak out and encourage each other to follow #SafeStorage practices so we can #EndFamilyFire, and ensure our kids come home safe each and every day. Senior Lecturer and Director of MPA Program at the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University Indianapolis
September 19 at 7 pm (ET) (live on Zoom): "Guns and American Exceptionalism: Comparing Gun Rights and Gun Violence in the US and Other Democracies." When it comes to guns, the United States is truly exceptional. Among the world's economically advanced democracies, it is the only one with a constitutionally guaranteed right to firearms ownership and a deeply embedded gun culture, and it has the highest rates of both gun ownership and gun violence. What are the roots and the implications of American gun culture? How do America's gun rights—and its gun violence—compare with other advanced democracies, including its closest neighbor, Canada? What are some of the policy options for reducing America’s uniquely high rates of gun violence? These are some of the questions that will be addressed by this important program. In Georgia, every day two children are shot, and every two days a child dies from gun violence. Firearm injuries are the leading cause of death for children and youth in America. For the safety of our families and communities, gun safety reform must be met head on and I am proud of the work I've done in the Georgia House to tackle gun violence: ✅ Secured $80k per school for safety enhancements, saying NO to arming teachers. ✅ Advocated for tax breaks on gun safes & safety training. ✅ Co-launched coalitions & sponsored bills to protect victims & ban assault weapons. ✅ Delivered $7.4 million for Community-based violence intervention and prevention programs. But there is more work to be done. We must close background check loopholes, mandate training, raise the gun purchase age, & limit high-capacity firearms. Our work isn't finished until every DeKalb County resident feels secure at home. #EndGunViolence #BuildingABetterGeorgiaTogether #BeckyDelivers

As the leading cause of death among children and teens ages 1-17, gun violence is a prevalent—and increasing—problem in the U.S. What are Americans’ perceptions of gun violence in the U.S.? My colleagues and I at the Ad Council Research Institute commissioned a poll among 3,000 Americans to get in-the-moment data on gun violence, and to promote prevention strategies to curtail gun violence and its impact on young people—including perception and attitudes, overall impact, and potential solutions to addressing gun violence and firearm-related incidents. Some of our key findings include: - Gun violence is a top three issue Americans are concerned about. - Americans, especially parents, are aware of and concerned about the risk and impact of gun violence on children, and some are discussing gun violence at home. - They believe education and safe gun storage are most likely to reduce gun violence. Michigan is our home. With these 4 new gun laws that went into effect in February, our home is now safer for all: 1) Safe Storage: Michigan requires guns to be locked and safely stored in homes with children. 2) Extreme Risk Protection Orders: Michigan can temporarily remove guns if a person is posing a risk to themselves or others. 3) Domestic Violence Protections: Michigan protects domestic violence survivors by removing all guns from abusers for 8 years. 4) Universal Background Checks: Michigan requires background checks for all gun purchases, including those between two individuals. We proudly support gun reform laws and partnered with End Gun Violence Michigan to get the word out (billboard sponsored by Physicians for the Prevention of Gun Violence).
