The 737 AEW&C…in 1990 was originally conceived and developed as a Direct Commercial Sales (DCS), Vice Foreign Military Sales (FMS) which is managed by the Department of Defense. As a DCS Program, it was approved by Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre and USAF Lieutenant General Tome Walters. The Program was initiated as a joint collaboration between Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and Australia (Wedgetail), and subsequently added Turkey (Peace Eagle), South Korea (Peace Eye), and the United Kingdom (Wedgetail II). Additionally, there were more than 10 other interested countries seriously considering the DCS procurement of the 737 AEW&C. Since the initiation of Australian Wedgetail and more than 20 years of ignoring U.S. Industry warnings to the U.S. Air Force that the AWACS logistical support & sustainability was quickly eroding & “drying up” and the ultimate reduction of the USAF AWACS fleet Operational Capability to 40%, the Air Force was compelled to purchase the Boeing - Northrop Grumman 737 AEW&C (Military Type Designated E-7A). NATO Picks E-7 as Its New AWACS; Six Aircraft to Start Nov. 17, 2023 NATO has selected Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail as its next airborne moving target indicator and air battle management aircraft, succeeding the aging Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS, the alliance announced this week. The first of six aircraft will be operational by 2031, but the fleet may grow beyond that number. The alliance joins Australia, South Korea, Turkey, the U.K., and the U.S. as having selected the Wedgetail; the U.S. Air Force plans to acquire 26 of the aircraft. The Wedgetail beat out several other offerings for NATO, including the Saab Global Eye; a Bombardier Global 6500 equipped with mission equipment provided by L3Harris; and Northrop Grumman’s E-2D. Northrop is also a major supplier to Boeing on the E-7, as the builder of the Wedgetail’s main, dorsally-mounted Multi-role Electronically-Scanned Array (MESA) radar. The value of the planned acquisition was not stated. The Air Force announced its selection of the E-7 in February, capping the undefinitized development contract at $1.2 billion. An Air Force-specific prototype will enter production by 2025, and the first E-7 is to be in service by 2027, with the last delivered by 2032. The Air Force’s acquisition of the E-7 is characterized by the service as “urgent,” as mission availability rates for its aging E-3s have fallen below 60 percent in recent years. That urgency required going with a non-developmental, off-the-shelf solution, officials said. However, USAF E-7s will be equipped with a unique mission gear suite, including more extensive communications functions and possible application as a controller of autonomous aircraft. Frequentis renews military radar data network of the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) The development of MilRADNET began in 2004 and was conceived as a pioneering solution for the exchange and distribution of military flight surveillance and flight plan data. The new contract represents an important milestone in the long-standing partnership between Bundeswehr and Frequentis. MilRADNET was the first military radar data network in Germany. In the latest project, SDDS-NG (Surveillance Data Distribution System - Next Generation) will replace the predecessor system. This transition is an important step that will further improve the performance and effectiveness of surveillance data processing. In addition, the stability and scalability requirements resulting from new technologies and additional usage units for flight surveillance data can be met efficiently. "MilRADNET's journey reflects our tireless efforts to keep military communication and networking at the highest level. The continuation of the MilRADNET project is a milestone in our long-standing cooperation. Estonian Defence and Aerospace Industry Association and the The Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine signed a cooperation agreement. This agreement aims to expand the already successful partnership between the two nations, particularly in developing Ukraine's defence capabilities. Currently, ten Estonian defence industry companies are active in Ukraine, providing a range of capabilities from sensors and observation devices to unmanned platforms and field hospitals. Collaborating closely with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, these companies have developed over 40 different positions tailored to meet Ukraine’s specific needs and requests.
