Embracing Sustainability: Varmora Ceramics Leads the Way on World Environment Day
On World Environment Day, Varmora Ceramics stands in solidarity with the global theme of “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.” As a leader in the ceramic industry, we recognise our unique position to influence positive environmental change.
Today, we’re not just manufacturing tiles; we’re cultivating a greener future. Our employees have enthusiastically participated in a tree plantation initiative right at the heart of our production facilities. Each tree planted is a commitment to our planet’s health and a testament to our motto: ‘Our Land, Our Future.’
We call upon all ceramic manufacturing units to join us in this green revolution. It’s time for our industry to pave the way for sustainable manufacturing practices. By restoring land and building drought resilience, we can ensure that our operations leave a legacy of vitality, not vulnerability.
Together, let’s mold a future where the ceramic industry is synonymous with environmental stewardship.

Mikado was designed with sustainability in mind from the outset: the chair’s covers are neither glued nor stapled and can be removed by service employees for cleaning or replacement. The concept of a simple exchange of components gives #Mikado long-term versatility, thereby ensuring longevity.

The #VitraCampus in Weil am Rhein is evolving: some of the sealed surfaces around Vitra’s production and visitor site are to be revegetated in future. In collaboration with Bureau Bas Smets, we have devised a corresponding master plan and taken the first steps with the planting of an initial test area using the Miyawaki method in November 2023.
The Miyawaki method is a reforestation strategy developed by Japanese phytosociologist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s. The species-rich Miyawaki plantings grow quickly and densely: after around three years, a natural, indigenous forest develops, which reaches maturity after a good 25 years – almost ten times as fast as classic mixed woodlands, which take approximately 200 years.

Congratulations to Ecosia for reaching this milestone of 200 million trees planted and growing! And all from reinvesting its profits as an (alternative) search engine, a service that we all use each day to find information online. Even after using Ecosia for several years, I still love watching the tree counter go up that shows how my online searches have funded tree projects around the world.
Just planting trees is not a panacea for the climate crisis. However, I've been impressed with how Ecosia works together with local organizations and communities on its projects around the world on its projects -- planting fresh, reforesting, preservation of old forests or rehabilitation after a wildfire. The cooperation with local organizations to understand their needs means it's not just about counting the number of trees planted, but also investing in their care to make sure they grow strong for long-term impact -- for the well-being of nature and the local people who live there.
As a not-for-profit B Corporation, Ecosia's financial transparency is also impressive. Their monthly reports - https://lnkd.in/eHNqC4Wt - are a great model.
If you aren't using Ecosia as your search engine, consider making it the default on your desktop browser and download the app for your phone: https://www.ecosia.org/
Have fun watching the tree counter go up as you search online 🌳

“Sistem hutan 👍👍👍”
This is the short message that accompanied this video clip that we received from Made 2, who is supervising operations at LittlePod’s collaborative orchard in Indonesia. It is a message – and film – that feels perfect to share on this, the International Day for Biological Diversity.
‘Sistem hutan’ means ‘forest system’ in Indonesian (we had to look this one up). It is this natural system and all that it entails that is at the heart of our efforts here at LittlePod.
The forest system seen in this film is – thanks to the pioneering polyculture methods that Made 2 and the farmers are employing at our innovative orchard – boosting biodiversity and regenerating the rainforest in a beautiful corner of Bali.
On this one small site alone, vanilla is thriving alongside other crops, including cloves, coffee, coconuts, bananas, cacao and a host of different tropical fruits. There are countless other patches and pockets like this at the LittlePod orchard, where this system of polyculture mimics the natural forest ecology, benefiting both the farmers and the environment alike.
Research has shown that where vanilla is planted, biodiversity is increased and, with the success of the LittlePod orchard has come a realisation in Indonesia that the vanilla industry can be reignited, and that the precious rainforest can be regenerated as a direct consequence.
Indeed, the Indonesian government has given our project in Bali their backing and has made a commitment to plant 27 million hectares of regenerative rainforest, 1% of which will be vanilla.
The monoculture practices that are used elsewhere in the world have been shown to do environmental damage, but Made 2 and LittlePod’s farmers have proved that there is a better method that brings immense environmental benefits.
It is this that we celebrate today, as we send our thanks once more to Made 2 and the team in Bali.
To all involved in Indonesia and to LittlePodders everywhere, Happy Biodiversity Day!
Sistem hutan 👍👍👍

Enjoying the fruits that I grew myself 25 years ago. "Jabuticaba" (Myrciaria cauliflora) is a typical and very tasty fruit from the "Atlantic Forest" biome in Brazil, and can be a good example for use in urban afforestation. There are farms specializing in the production of this fruit, which achieves good prices on the market. But in general, jaboticaba is associated with trees that grow in the backyards of grandma's old houses.
