People & Talent Senior Leader | International & Humanitarian Sector | Qualified Executive Coach | Building up org. processes, self-aware talent & transformative humanitarian leaders for sustainable culture change |
In that bridging time of weekend into normal week I'm reflecting on the importance of connection and community. Thinking particularly about the need for professional community, in this era of remote work, increased social isolation, and ongoing global crisis; and the compounding challenges international Humanitarian staff face, often living as immigrants, perhaps in transitory contracts, and under manifold pressures. Social health is the aspect of overall health and wellbeing that comes from 🫱connection🫲. I read a great excerpt from Kasley Killam, MPH (https://lnkd.in/eJfe4Xxm) and can't wait to read the book. It's a call to action with the goal of “giving people the tools to be healthier through their relationships and setting up our society in such a way that connection and community are the norm.” Something we need to model into the workplace too. The language of social health, as articulated in #TheArtAndScienceOfConnection, suggests three key mindsets; which to my mind prove how necessary this focus is for organisations: ➕ “Social health is inclusive and inviting.” ➕ “Social health is positive and generative.” ➕ “Social health is proactive and preventive.” So I hope we all go into this next week seeking connection and engagement, for ourselves and those around us. 🤝

💭 A not entirely convincing article from Richard Layard, but a good place to start conversations. 👉 We can’t start talking about wellbeing without talking about basic needs. Since the Tories took power, Trussell Trust food bank usage has soared to almost 3m a year. UK basic infrastructure is crumbling and eradicating poverty needs to be priority. Number 1. 👉 Yes, therapy can be both effective and cost-effective, but it’s largely curative or about managing unhappiness/distress, rather than preventative. The bigger question is about what makes life worthwhile and the role of the state in culture. We can start by finding the change down the back of the sofa so that arts and sport funding can be catalytic for communities. You know, everyone should have access to a choir, a community garden and Sunday League footy. 👉 Let’s differentiate between eudaemonic and hedonic happiness. The former is longer lasting, the latter linked these days to even more instant dopamine hits. Feelings of control over our own lives, connectedness to others and capability in the face of overwhelm are key. Again … choirs, gardens, footy. 👉 Let’s challenge all this talk about ‘productivity’ and ‘growth’ and start to talk about the benefits of experiences over stuff. We have a problem when the biggest draw in town is the opening of a new Primark. Sustainability and a society built on Gross Domestic Happiness, rather than GDP, has to be our starting point. Did I mention choirs …. #happiness #positivepsychology #creativecoaching #artspolicy
