Next week JEDI MATTERS Collective is hosting the first of it's kind (that I'm aware of!) LGBTQ+ FMCG meet up at the Lucky Saint | B Corp™ Pub 🏳️🌈 . It's an open invite to anyone within the SME FMCG community to attend, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community. A panel discussion (hosted by Pip & Nut | B Corp very own Billy O'Reilly) will open the evening up. The panel will share their own lived experiences and perspective of what it's like to work in this industry. After which there's a chance for the conversation to continue over a pint or two for those in the room. Why is this important? Creating spaces for different communities to connect at work is key to enabling our workplaces to be more inclusive, having said that within SME's it's sometimes hard to foster these connections purely by the fact our teams are small. It's for this reason why JEDI MATTERS Collective exists. To join forces to build these connections across our industry to foster greater diversity in our sector. 81% of LGBTQ+ people surveyed in Denmark were personally exposed to, or witness to anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination at work within the last two years, according to BCG and LGBT+ Danmark. This is a startling statistic. And it shows that despite Denmark being a relative frontrunner when it comes to LGBTQ+ equity and inclusion, there are still many who do not feel totally secure in the workplace due to their gender identity or sexual orientation.    This is why I am so proud that Coloplast takes inclusivity and security seriously, and why I am passionate about driving continuous improvement in this area. In FREE+, Coloplast's LGBTQ+ employee resource group (ERG), we have recently focused on what it means to "bring your true self to work", feeling secure and being valued as a colleague regardless of your gender identity or sexual orientation (or any other part of your identity). During August (Copenhagen Pride Month), we launched a video on the topic in which colleagues from around the world shared what it means to them to be themselves at work, the challenges they face, and how to be a supportive ally to others.    We hope that this will inspire and guide our colleagues in Denmark and around the world in how to build and thrive in a supportive and secure environment. So - it's ✨ Pride Month 🏳️🌈 ✨ - which means it's time for my annual whinge about brands jumping on the rainbow washing wagon. 🌈 LGBTQ+ people don't want your rainbow packaged sandwich, your pride edition shoes or your 'love is love' tshirt that only ever comes out for one month of the year. None of this makes you an 'ally' company. 🙄 What does make you an LGBTQ+ supportive brand/business: 🏳️🌈 Educating others on LGBTQ+ matters. 🏳️🌈 Normalising LGBTQ+ topics and discussions. 🏳️🌈 Supporting LGBTQ+ employees and create a positive internal culture. 🏳️🌈 Directly impacting and supporting LGBTQ+ causes. 🏳️🌈 Share and demonstrate your LGBTQ+ inclusive acts. 🏳️🌈 Actual advocacy and action. OR NOT? 👎 Inclusivity VS accessibility Can your brand be truly inclusive, without an accessible product? 🏳️🌈 When we consider inclusivity in the brand world, we often think culture building around the LGBTQ+ community, pride and other subcultures. 🏳️🌈 However, there’s a quiet subsection of consumers, which our physical branding is excluding. There’s at least 2.2 billion visually impaired people in the world, and with a globally ageing population, this number is only growing. 🧑🦯➡️ A study by the RNIB, found that 74% of visually impaired respondents had bought the wrong product in store, due to poor packaging guidance. Needless to say, physical branding has a long way to go, before delivering a truly inclusive brand experience.
