Since United for Global Mental Health was launched, the American Friends of UnitedGMH has supported its work. Today the outgoing Chair of American Friends of United for Global Mental Health - Gabrielle Fitzgerald - and I share some reflections on mental health today. Dedicated campaigning has placed mental health on the global agenda, leading to significant policy milestones like UN and WHO resolutions. Countries are updating their mental health laws and decriminalising suicide, with UnitedGMH supporting these efforts in places like Pakistan and Ghana. International donors are closing a $200 billion investment gap, integrating mental health into their strategies, while innovative solutions and youth-led initiatives are driving change and support worldwide. I encourage you to read about these inspiring milestones and join us in celebrating the remarkable strides we've made as a mental health community. Did you know that July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month? One of the critical aspects of BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month is highlighting the disparities in mental health care access and treatment. BIPOC communities are more likely to experience socioeconomic disadvantages, discrimination, and trauma, all of which can contribute to higher rates of mental health issues. However, these communities often face challenges in accessing appropriate mental health services due to factors such as a lack of culturally sensitive providers, language barriers, and financial constraints. By acknowledging these disparities, the month-long observance encourages policy changes and the implementation of inclusive practices within the mental health care system. As we enter into the 1st day of October, our employees have begun collaborating about the significance of our chosen careers in behavioral health as well as how mental health has impacted our personal lives. On October 10th, we honor World Mental Health Day. But to everyone at Mental Health Outcomes every day is World Mental Health Day. Stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier to social inclusion as well as access to the supportive mental health care. Importantly, we can all play our part in increasing awareness about mental health support and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to do that collectively. We envision a world in which mental health is valued, promoted and protected; where everyone has an equal opportunity to mental health wellness and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone in our communities can access the mental health care they need. This July, we recognize National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities. At ARCHI, our network of partners are committed to fostering inclusive health care where everyone has access to the mental health resources they need. Minority communities often encounter significant barriers to mental health care, including stigma, lack of equitable access to culturally competent providers, and socioeconomic challenges. These barriers can prevent individuals from seeking and receiving the support they need, leading to disparities in mental health outcomes. While the month of recognition comes to an end today, our collective work continues. Our partners are raising awareness, promoting access, and inverting the burden of navigating care together as we work towards breaking down the barriers to mental health care and creating a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone. The Mental Health Commission of NSW funded BEING - Mental Health Consumers to develop a network for people with a personal lived experience of mental health issues in NSW. The BEING Lived Experience Network, BEING CONNECTED, is an online network of people with lived experience who want to participate in activities such as co-design groups, consultations, committees and working groups, or who would like to publicly share their story.   BEING’s new Lived Experience Network is a significant step towards embedding lived experience perspectives across the mental health system in NSW, aligning with the Commission's priorities outlined in Living Well in Focus 2020-2024.
