Women in their 40s are starting to move sideways or out. There is a pattern of changes going on with middle-aged females in the workspace. They are at the point of stepping up and instead they are stepping down, moving sideways or out... Although the initial response may seem to revolve around a desire to prioritize family, I am convinced that there are deeper underlying factors at play, ones that often remain unspoken or even unnoticed. 👇🏻 Here’s my perspective: I believe hormones play a big role in this shift in two ways. 1️⃣ Perimenopause. The transition to menopause that lasts several years, can bring unexpected symptoms that affect work and daily life. Many women face stigma around perimenopause, which can make it hard to talk about with colleagues or seek support from male supervisors. When supervisors don't understand or acknowledge perimenopause, it can really affect an employee's well-being. She feels unseen, misunderstood, lost, alone, she lo longer believes in her skill and talent because she does not recognise herself anymore. So she leaves. 2️⃣ Masculinisation. If a woman chooses the path of professional success, she will swing more masculinised. Men do not run on the same types of cycles like women do. Women go through hormonal changes that impact all aspects of themselves. The female body is fluid and adaptive. It goes every month through chemical changes which impacts her state. So her skill and talent does not work with a schedule. However, our current societal structures and expectations confines women within rigid schedules and masculine paradigms. When women conform too closely to masculine ideals of productivity and efficiency, they risk losing touch with their authentic selves. Women thrive in environments that honor their fluidity and intuition. So after having spent 20 years in such rigid environments, and finding themselves in their mid-life they realize that they lost touch with their authentic self. So they leave. 💭 What do you think is the underlying cause?
