Chaplains (or “spiritual care providers”) have long served people in the midst of life’s challenges in places like hospitals, hospices, the military, prisons, and institutions of higher education. More of the people chaplains serve today are not connected to local religious leaders. Looking to the future, it is likely that chaplains will be the primary spiritual and religious leaders who care for growing numbers of people in the United States. This is another amazing insight from 1964. James Burnham makes the general observation--no pun intended--that few career military men are liberal ideologues. However, this too can change over time. "As liberalism becomes ascendant in public opinion, the soldiers-to-be absorb liberal ideas from the educational process, and after entering military service continue to be bathed in liberal ideas and rhetoric pouring from newspapers, magazines, books, television and sermons. And as liberal civilians move into the positions of governmental power in a nation with a tradition of 'civilian supremacy,' they begin deliberate moves to alter the military mind according to liberal prescriptions, by suitable indoctrination and censorship, demotions or dismissals of stubborn anti-liberals, manipulation of key appointments and so on." ~ James Burnham, Suicide of the West (1964)

Our offices are closed today, Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in observance of the Juneteenth Holiday. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a Union Army general arrived in Texas with 2,000 soldiers and informed over 250,000 Black Americans enslaved in Texas that slavery had been abolished following the conclusion of the Civil War. Juneteenth On June 19, 1865 the Union Army arrived in Texas and notified Texas officials that slavery was officially over. Even though the institution of slavery had existed for millennia, our nation’s birth happened at a time that world consciousness finally began to see it as unacceptable —thank God! Imagine being born in a time when slavery was just a part of life? How we have grown as a planet. And each generation will continue to grow. Ending the institution of slavery in America came at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives, but it was the price that the supporters of slavery required. And it was the price anti-slavery soldiers paid…a necessary sacrifice for ending an evil institution that existed for thousands of years in world history at-large. #freedom #antislavery #EmancipationDay On this, I do have a theory about how our future decendants will judge first world countries for outsourcing to less developed nations for cheaper labor. Mark my words. Today’s world will be judged by tomorrow’s world for it.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY: Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated. Origins: The custom of holding observances (including the laying of flowers on burial sites) to remember and honor those who gave their lives in military service goes back many hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In the United States, that custom has long since been formalized in the creation of Memorial Day (formerly known as Decoration Day), a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Traditionally, every year the President of the United States (or, in his absence, another high-ranking government official) visits Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day to honor all those Americans who have died in military service to their country by participating in a symbolic wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.
