As I step away from Berwickshire High School for the next year, I want to congratulate our school community on the superb progress we’ve made together in 4 years. Our school today is unrecognisable from the one that was rated three ‘Weak’s & an ‘Unsatisfactory’ in its 2019 inspection. Recent staff quotes help capture just how far we’ve come: - “Our school ethos is excellent.” - “Behaviour is very good and something we should be proud of.” - “This is by far the best professional learning offer of any school.” - “Staff CPD just gets better and better.” In the re-inspection, inspectors reported: “The quality and consistency of learning, teaching and assessment has improved considerably” and “The school environment now provides a calm, orderly context for learning”. We’ve got to where we are by focusing on the right things, in the right way: 1. The continuous improvement of teaching practice. 2. High-quality professional development, focused on teaching and learning. Supporting both is our ongoing focus on high standards of behaviour across our school. A real team effort, and one everyone involved should feel very proud of.

It is teacher appreciation week and my feed is filled with fellow educators calling for appreciating teachers by paying them more. As a former teacher with 16 years in the classroom, I absolutely agree. But this teacher appreciation week, I’d love to focus on 3 other reforms that could make the teaching profession so much better: 1. Improve teacher coaching and support model. I currently meet with my manager for coaching and collaboration every other week. As a teacher, I generally only met with my manager once a semester for a formal evaluation. The structure of most schools does not allow for coaching, development, and support. But it could. 2. Create a teacher schedule that allows professionals to do all of their work within their work day. If I’m with students for basically the entire school day, the implication is that I have to lesson plan, grade, collaborate with my colleagues, contact parents, mentor new teachers, and grow professionally in the evenings and on the weekends. That’s ridiculous and unsustainable. 3. Involved teachers meaningfully in decision making. They are important members of the team and deserve to have a say. A great process will almost lead to a better outcome. Happy teacher appreciation week!
