TransMountain Expansion Update A few interesting bits... "18. Since the Commission’s approval of the approximate 4.2-kilometre Previous Deviation in March 2022, Trans Mountain has proceeded with construction in accordance with the Commission’s approval. However, Trans Mountain is encountering significant technical challenges with the micro-tunneling along an approximate 1.3-kilometre portion of the Approved Route." "Further, to date, the costs of micro-tunneling have significantly exceeded the typical costs of completing trenchless construction. In addition, every month of delay to mechanical completion (and by extension, the TMEP in-service date) results in significant increased construction costs well beyond initial cost estimates for the micro-tunneling, not including costs and impacts to various third parties who are relying on the timely completion of the TMEP." "Based on its assessment of the options available to avoid these potential outcomes, Trans Mountain has determined that the only feasible option is to change the construction methodology for an approximately 1.3-kilometre segment to a combination of horizontal directional drilling (“HDD”) and conventional open trench. This change in methodology requires route adjustments that would change the route back to the detailed route on the Lands that was previously approved by Page 5 the Commission in Order OPL-003-2020 (C06126). Importance of Geological and Geotechnical Investigations in Hydropower plants projects and dams projects The purpose of site investigations for any project is provide the information on the geology and geotechnical properties that designers require in order to design a safe and economical structure. Inadequate geological and geotechnical investigation may lead to over-budgeting, schedule overrun, and serious loss of safety. Therefore geological surveys are essential for any kind of project especially for large and most expensive structures like a dams and hydropower plants an adequate assessment and the closest investigation is required. This briefly present a review of an evaluation of overall results of the geological / geotechnical investigations of Hydropower Plant project. The basement of the project area consists of a massive, coarse grained granite of early Triassic age. Therefore according to the exploration results of the feasibility studies led to a dam design based on a possible rock foundation. The assumption that sound rock is to be found within 5 m below the ground surface resulting from the feasibility study could not be confirmed neither on the terrace plain nor in the river beds by the results of the drilling during the project construction. The difference between explorations of feasibility study phase and actual drilling was revealed after 4 months of the start of the project. The deviation of the findings during drilling from the design basis data necessitated the project to be redesigned which triggered the need for more ground investigations and consequently it led the project to be delayed for about two and a half years. Beside that, generally three possible solutions could be devised as a redesigned project : 1. Keeping the design and improving the ground to “rock” in ground sections where necessary. 2. Shifting the structure to the right bank side while placing the essential parts of the structure which are most sensible to settlements or differential settlements on outcropping or near-surface bedrock. 3. A hybrid solution that combines the above two mentioned solutions . #dams #hydropower
