Out of the 166 selected PCIs and PMIs: 1) over half (85) are electricity, offshore and smart electricity grid projects, with many expected to be commissioned between 2027 and 2030. 2) for the first time, hydrogen and electrolyser projects (65) are included, which will play a major role in enabling energy system integration and the decarbonisation of EU industry. 3) the list also includes 14 CO2 network projects in line with our goals to create a market for carbon capture and storage.

Exciting news for the EU Hydrogen market! The European Commission has approved the #Hy2Infra #IPCEI, which includes projects in 7 Member States and a total value of EUR 6.9 billion of public funding. This is expected to unlock €5.4 billion in private investments, accelerating the decarbonization forward. The #Hy2Infra package includes impressive numbers, such as 3.2 GW of #electrolysers, 2,700 km of #hydrogenpipelines, 370 GWh of #hydrogenstorage, and ~6,000 t/y #LOHC handling terminals. The package comprises of 33 projects and 32 companies, including 5 SMEs. This marks the third support package approved for #hydrogen projects in the EU after #Hy2Tech (EUR 5.4 billion) and #Hy2Use (EUR 5.2 billion) were approved in 2022. Today, the European Commission is launching work on the development of a new #HydrogenMechanism under the #EuropeanHydrogenBank. The hydrogen pilot mechanism will collect, process and give access to information on demand and supply for renewable, low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives, allowing European off-takers to match with both European and foreign suppliers. The results of the #EuropeanHydrogenBank auction already showed that we have hydrogen producers and consumers finding each other (see results here: https://lnkd.in/ek6bgWiv), but it is clear that more support is needed to connect producers and suppliers. This is why we are launching a new tender to find a service provider to develop an IT platform to operate the pilot mechanism. The Commission plans to sign a contract by the end of this year, so that it can start its operations by mid-2025. The European Commission has adopted the 6th list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs). The list consists of 166 infrastructure projects: over half (85) are electricity, offshore and smart electricity grid projects, and 14 #CO2 network projects are included. Very importantly, for the first time, the list also includes 65 hydrogen related projects, evidencing a strong shift towards the achievement of the Green Deal goals. This is a major step forward when it comes to building a European hydrogen backbone, with several projects contributing to the creation of #hydrogen networks, storage sites and import terminals, helping to link hydrogen demand and supply across countries and regions. Selected projects will now receive PCI status and will be eligible to access Connecting Europe Facility funds (except for electrolyser projects). Most of them are expected to be commissioned by 2030; except for the Belgian and Dutch hydrogen backbones, likely to be operational respectively in 2040 and 2050. Following its adoption by the Commission, the Delegated Act presenting the 6th PCI list will be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council. Both co-legislators have two months to either accept or reject the list – a process that can be extended by a further two months if needed. 🆕 Last week, the European Commission has launched the first #auction under the European Hydrogen Bank to support the production of #renewablehydrogen in Europe. Here are some of the main points: ⬇ 🔹 Auction for Renewable Hydrogen: The Commission launched the first auction under the European Hydrogen Bank to support the production of renewable hydrogen in Europe, with an initial €800 million of emissions trading revenues. 🔹 Fixed Premium per Kilogram: Producers of renewable hydrogen can bid for support in the form of a fixed premium per kilogram of hydrogen produced, up to a ceiling of 4.5€/kg. The premium is intended to bridge the gap between the production cost and the market price of renewable hydrogen. 🔹 Hydrogen Bank Objectives: The Hydrogen Bank aims to stimulate investments in the production capacity, build a market for renewable hydrogen, and help achieve the #repowereu Plan goal to produce 10 million tonnes of hydrogen domestically by 2030. 🔹 Auctions-as-a-Service Mechanism: The Commission also offers a new mechanism that allows Member States to finance projects that have bid in the auction, but not been selected for Innovation Fund support, without the need to run a separate auction at national level.
