🛰 Did you know that Italy contributed EUR2.3 billion to the European Space Agency (ESA) budget in 2023? 🚀 This makes Italy a top 3 financial contributor. Italy's involvement in ESA stems from its long-standing commitment to space activities, which dates back to the early days of European space exploration. Italy is an original 1975 signatory of the ESA Convention. Italy holds a significant position in ESA's decision-making processes. Italian representatives are actively involved in ESA’s Council and other governing bodies, helping shape the agency’s strategic direction, by often holding key leadership positions within ESA, contributing to the agency’s management and project oversight. One of the many reasons to be part of Italy’s thriving aerospace industry, ranking in Europe's top 5 it can be your getaway to European customers. What a vibrant way to kick off the year in the space industry with the 16th European Space Conference! 🚀 It was an exceptional platform to reconnect with peers post-Christmas, and I must say, it felt great to see so many familiar faces once again. A special shoutout to the organizers of the side events that added so much value to the overall experience: the Spanish CDTI-SOST 2024, orchestrated by CDTI Innovación - Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación, and the Occitanie’s Space Strategy session: "Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future of EU Space," organized by the La Région Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, showcased the immense potential for space and highlighted the importance of regional collaborations, especially between the Occitan and Catalan space ecosystems. #space #Europe #SpaceInnovation #SustainableSpace

Poznań, Poland 🇵🇱 , has been officially selected to host the world's most prominent space event, the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2027. During #IAC2024 in Milan, which welcomed over 11,000 participants, the General Assembly of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) approved Poland's bid, marking a significant milestone for the Polish space sector. The organization of this event will be a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, the European Space Foundation (Host Organization), the Polish Space Agency, the City of Poznań, MTP Group, Poznan Congress Center, Poznan Convention Bureau, and The Way (producer of the Impact conference), with the support of LOT Polish Airlines. Efforts to bring the IAC to Poland spanned nearly two years and included several stages outlined by the International Astronautical Federation. The final selection of the IAC 2027 organizer took place on the last day of this year’s congress, with several hundred Federation members—representing space agencies, universities, companies, and NGOs in the space sector—casting their votes. Gratitude has been extended to all supporters, as work begins on preparing for this prestigious event, which holds great importance for Poland and the entire Central and Eastern European region. The space community looks forward to gathering in Poznań for #IAC2027Poland! 3,5 Billion EUR for Connectivity, between Europe and Asia: the Yavuz-Sultan-Selim-Bridge. 1.4 km seem to be large, but for space dimensions it is short. It has been built just in 3 years, 2013-2016. Also short in universal time scale. Why do I think about it, shipping below the bridge towards the Black Sea? Turkey decided for a bridge for 3.5 B.EUR, and Europe/Germany complains about 12 BEUR for a satellite constellation connecting Europe with the hole world??? Achieving "non-dependence", also within 3-5 years!!! Ok, the involvement of a large number of European space ecosystem players is not yet secured. This must be adjusted, including a reliable sustainable approach. But Germany alone has an annual household 2024 of 476 Billion. Hey, it is a matter of priorities, of the political parties and its individuals. By the way: since I saw the photo of the Bosporus from space, taken from the German EO-Sat ENMAP (see cover page of "Deutsche Raumfahrtstrategie"), for which we HPS delivered an optical baffle as secondary structure, and since I was first time in Romania at the Black Sea in Mamaia and Vama Veche, I always wanted to experience the water-route by myself. COOL, I DID IT TODAY! "Teşekkürler, Türkiye" for this matching relation.

A huge thanks to the Agência Espacial Portuguesa | Portugal Space and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) for the chance to attend their Lisbon conference this week and report on the final ratification of the Lisbon Declaration for Outer Space which will be on the agenda for the UN Summit of the Future in New York in September. A fully sustainable space industry that looks after and protects our precious near-Earth environment is the only way forward if we want to safeguard the future and all the satellites contribute to everyday life on Earth. I was pleased to meet up again with many colleagues including Daniel Smith of AstroAgency and Ryan Laird of Green Orbit Digital, both of whom share my own views on the subject and are passionate about promoting the space sustainability cause through their own space marketing and communications businesses. The Lisbon Declaration for Outer Space was presented to representatives of UN countries present including, the director of UNOOSA, Aarti Holla-Maini, and also Ana Paiva, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Science. It captures input from across industry, government and academia, and calls upon the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) to continue to play a leading role in the debate on current and emerging challenges regarding the safe and sustainable use of space. Emphasising the importance of the declaration, the executive director of the Portuguese Space Agency, Hugo André Costa, echoed the thoughts of many in his concluding remarks: “What we are doing today is not for us. Our decisions will impact our children and grandchildren, and this is the legacy we want to leave.” #spacesustainability #environment #space #Portugal #UNOOSA
