"Sustaining innovation is innovating existing business models, disruptive innovation is creating a new one." Michael Horn is a global thought leader who co-founded the Clayton Christensen Institute and co-authored Disrupting Class in 2008 with Clay Christensen. In a New York Times article in 2013 they predicted the demise of large numbers of universities just about now. Michael reassesses their predictions in the light of one university a week closing in the US and consolidation in many public state university systems. With an imminent tipping point in the UK leading to government preparing for mass insolvency, international fee caps are about to be legislated in Australia. Michael thinks their predictions are on track and accelerated by AI. Others think this is all a distraction and not serious. My advice is to be curious about whether disruptive innovation is underway in the sector globally. You can listen to views of a serious academic who teaches this at Harvard Graduate School of Education and advises Minerva University and others. Six years ago I was fairly certain that humans had no chance of fixing the mess we have made in the world. But that has changed and I am more hopeful than ever before. We are rapidly moving down a path that provides us an opportunity for growth, innovation, and clean-up. If we get it right, machine intelligence offers us a chance at solving the world’s biggest challenges without the limitations of being human. If we get it right.
