May is National Water Safety Month, and the Shiawassee Family YMCA is sharing tips on how we can all stay safe in and around the water. Tip # 6: Don’t jump in the water to save a friend who is struggling in deep water. If an adult or child finds their friend in deep water unexpectedly, their natural reaction may be to jump in the water to try and save them. Even if they are a great swimmer, a panicked person will overpower them, pulling the rescuer under water. The Y’s Safety Around Water program teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for them, and pull them to safety. By using this technique, an adult or child can help their friend without compromising their own safety.#WaterSafetyMonth

May is National Water Safety Month! 🌊 Here are things to remember about water safety: - Ensure every member of your family learns to swim so they at least achieve skills of water competency: able to enter the water, get a breath, stay afloat, change position, swim a distance then get out of the water safely. - Employ layers of protection including barriers to prevent access to water, life jackets, and close supervision of children to prevent drowning. -Know what to do in a water emergency – including how to help someone in trouble in the water safely, call for emergency help and CPR.

Our latest PSA is a collaboration with the #TucsonFireDepartment about the ABC's of water safety are an essential guide to staying safe around water. "A" stands for adult supervision, emphasizing the importance of always having a responsible adult watching when children are near water. "B" stands for barriers, which means using fences and locks to prevent unsupervised access to pools and other bodies of water. "C" stands for classes, promoting the idea that both children and adults should learn how to swim and understand basic water safety skills. These three principles together form the foundation of staying safe in and around water environments. https://lnkd.in/g9e35bRi
