St. Mary’s County Health Department Behavioral Health Division in collaboration with SAMHSA’s Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families Technical Assistance Center and the Maryland Behavioral Health Administration hosted a Crisis Intercept Mapping (CIM) Workshop May 30th and 31st. The Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families (SMVF) Crisis Intercept Map for Suicide Prevention is a tool that helps stakeholders visualize how at-risk SMVF flows through the crisis care system. It also helps community stakeholders identify local resources and service gaps and conduct strategic planning around established priorities for change. CIM workshops bring together leaders from different agencies and systems to work together to identify strategies to divert at-risk SMVF to appropriate and effective prevention and support services.

In less than 24 hours, 750+ people will descend upon Adelaide, which is not a largely populated city. So for that many people to come together in one place, it's for a very important reason: suicide. Pre-conference workshops are already underway, with the official National Suicide Prevention Conference beginning tomorrow morning, and running until 2 May. We've all been affected by suicide in some way or another. It's essential we learn, share, and understand as much as possible about suicide prevention, and connect with the leaders, researchers, advocates and people with lived experience of suicide so that through our Collective Courage, we can Accelerate Impact, reduce the stigma surrounding suicide, and drive change. I'll be at the conference from Tuesday - Thursday, advocating for consistent and genuine lived experience collaborations, and sharing the importance and value of the insights that people with lived experience bring to the table. 10th September is World Suicide Prevention Day. Each year, over 700,000 lives are lost to suicide globally. This year marks the release of the new triennial theme for 2024 - 2026: "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with a call to action "Start the Conversation". In line with this theme, we're sharing an insightful article by Quenton Mayer, a student member of the Fiji Psychological Society, who emphasizes the importance of honest, supportive conversations.
