Message to On-Campus Residents The following message was shared with on-campus residents on Friday, Sept. 20. September 20, 2024 2-min. read Last night, a local television station ran a story about testing for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a number of our facilities across campus, including in residence halls. First, let me acknowledge that I understand why this would cause concern, especially because of the way the station presented the information, which we believe was in an effort to stoke unnecessary fear and anxiety without reporting all of the facts. Let me be very clear – our highest priority is the safety of our community, and especially of our on-campus residents. Where appropriate, NC State routinely tests building materials for hazardous substances, including PCBs, when conducting renovation projects. As is the case for buildings around the country, a number of the buildings on NC State’s campus were built during a time period when materials like asbestos, lead-based paint and PCBs were widely used in construction. Detection of a hazardous substance in a specific building material does not mean that people have been exposed to that substance. To put it plainly, if a building’s conditions appear in need of a more comprehensive examination, we will take – and have taken – action to ensure the safety of our community. You put trust in us to not only provide you with a valuable education and experience, but also to provide you with a safe environment in which to live and learn. We do not take that lightly, and we remain committed to maintaining that trust. I recognize that words may only go so far to help with anxiety that some of you may be feeling. If you need support, please take advantage of the many resources available to you as a member of the Pack. Thank you, Randy Woodson Chancellor

Architects are focusing on safety features to keep perpetrators out and create a sense of community for students. High-profile school shootings, and the fear they spread, are shaping how architects design the modern American school. The safety features, some required by state law, include measures meant to keep armed perpetrators out and to help first responders. #architects #design #safety

We did not reinvent the wheel, we have exploited the state of the art of National, European, and International fire performance base design codes and standards. This is the key message I gave to the audience during the presentation of the #ItalianFireSafetyCode this morning at the international SFPE Performance-Based Design Conference (Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) in #Copenhagen. An attempt to have a fire regulation that is based on evidence, is flexible, and is ready to consider the complex new challenging world we live in to tackle the risk of fire and make buildings and activities fire safer.

Students at Grand Rapids Public Schools Innovation Central High School are starting the year in a newly upgraded space! We worked with Kingscott Associates to preserve the building's historic charm while bringing it into the 21st century with improvements such as: ✅ A new chilled water and heating plant ✅ Energy-efficient LED lighting and upgraded electrical systems ✅ Modern ventilation and air conditioning ✅ Classroom updates, including interactive teaching walls The $40M renovation was designed with #energyefficiency at its core, and is on track for LEED certification. Our MEP systems are projected to save 29% in energy and 33% in energy costs compared to a Baseline ASHRAE building. The new lighting alone will use just 25% of the energy compared to the previous systems, contributing to a brighter, more #sustainable future. #K12engineering #MEPEngineering https://loom.ly/xfu380g

Is the year half over already? I am partially through my term as president of AIA|DC, and I look forward to using every remaining day (including holidays) to make AIA|DC more relevant to our members, our profession and our community. At the board’s July meeting, we outlined our Q3 rocks (action items) and wanted to share: For the Community Working Group (Abigail R. Brown, FAIA, Gregory Chang, FAIA, Mary Fitch, Joseph McKenley, AIA, and Roark Redwood), work is focused on energizing October’s #ArchitectureMonth, including a panel discussion on the future of architectural education with deans of our local colleges and universities. In addition to expanding our members, including Associate AIA and Affiliates, the Members Working Group (Abimbola Bamidele, Eleanor Choi, AIA, LEED AP BD-C, Lawrence Gill AIA LEED AP, Alison Pavilonis, AIA, Yiselle Santos Rivera, AIA, SHRM-SCP) is building on the success of last year's mixer and planning another with the DCNOMA (DC Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects). The Profession Working Group (Ellen Hatton, Tom Lenar, Joanna Schmickel, FAIA, Mika Naraynsingh, AIA, and myself) will continue to support and strengthen our Professional Committees. We hosting an in-person Open House on 16 September at the #DistrictArchitectureCenter. Mark your calendar to meet committee leadership and learn about what our committees do. Don’t worry, we aren’t taking the summer off! In just a few short weeks, AIA|DC is hosting the first of a two-part series on Permit Streamlining. We start with a virtual townhall featuring District of Columbia Department of Buildings staff including Director Brian Hanlon. Goals include hearing about current initiatives, as well as collecting feedback on permitting friction points. The second part of the series focused on developing solutions in a workshop / charette format, will take place in the fall. https://lnkd.in/eV7rt5uz

The education symposium focusing on public building occupancy safety featured a demonstration showcasing the importance of using specialty films for window fortification. In contrast to a standard 8 mm film, a specialty film that is four times stronger and at the same cost was highlighted. The demonstration involved throwing four large rocks at the window, which did not penetrate the specialty film. Additionally, the demonstrator proceeded to beat the window with a baseball bat, showcasing the film’s exceptional strength and durability as the bat did not penetrate the window. This demonstration emphasized that there is much more to window fortification than standard ballistic films. The impressive performance of the specialty film in withstanding various impacts highlights the importance of utilizing advanced technologies to enhance public building occupancy safety. This serves as a valuable lesson for attendees of the symposium, emphasizing the significance of investing in high-quality window fortification solutions to ensure the security and safety of public spaces. The video is most impressive, check it out!
