Having an architect in the cabinet is critical to advising on issues of the built environment.
“Architects are the civic problem solvers you didn’t know you needed,” said AIA President Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC, addressing the 2024 United States Conference of Mayors. 🔑 Ensuring expert, licensed #architects are on the ground guiding city leaders to protect and preserve America’s built environment is key to Dowdell’s agenda. City of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is a perfect example of that. “You can tackle the issues on the front end, listen to the community on the front end, and on the back end get the results – that is a win-win for everyone," said Mayor Cantrell. Director of Engineering and Development | Floodplain Administrator | Disaster Resiliency and Recovery Advocate
In early history, #architects were THE designer...engineer, surveyor, planner, and conceptual artist all wrapped into one. We've diversified our talent significantly since then, but now more than ever is a wholistic approach required. No building is an island. Professionals need to be on the same page and in the same code book; a task sometimes easier said than done. Municipalities in particular are vulnerable to numerous avenues of outsourcing, sometimes for cost reasons, sometimes for liability reasons. Having someone on staff with their finger on the pulse not only cuts down on email chain length, but integrates the project designer with the community--it allows them to become part of the solution, rather than one of many third-parties.

Reroofing a highrise is an adventure that never fails to ignite one’s passion for architecture and construction. The complexities and intricacies of such projects are what keep our minds sharp and creativity flowing. There are so many crucial elements to consider – material delivery logistics, tackling project-specific issues, ensuring utmost safety, and, of course, providing seamless site access. The high altitude presents its share of challenges, but it also provides us with the most breathtaking views. The reward for the extra effort is the panoramic vista of the city skyline. It's amazing how reroofing a highrise brings together a team of dedicated professionals, each contributing their unique expertise. The camaraderie and synergy that emerge from such collaborations are truly inspiring. The team at DTR Consulting Services, Inc. would like to thank the team from SOPREMA USA, especially Missy McLain and Alan LaPierre! Here’s to everyone involved in the journey of reroofing highrises! Let's continue to embrace the challenges and revel in the views! #Buildingscienceguys #DTRConsulting #Waterproofing #Constructionindustry #Buildingenvelope #Sustainability #PanoramicViews #PassionForArchitecture #Buildingscience #Enclosurespecialist #Buildinglifecycle #ReroofingHighrise #ArchitectureAdventure #ConstructionExcellence #Teamwork #SafetyFirst

On-Site Engineer at Ramjack Technology Solutions | Providing Client-Centric Support and Maintenance Excellence
In a bustling city known for its technological innovation, Emily, a young engineer fresh out of university, landed her first job at a construction firm specializing in sustainable architecture. Excited to apply her knowledge and skills, Emily eagerly dove into her new role. Her first assignment involved working on a project to retrofit an old, dilapidated building into a modern, energy-efficient office complex. The project was ambitious, with tight deadlines and complex structural challenges. Emily was assigned to a team led by a seasoned engineer named Mark. As they began the project, Emily quickly realized that the work was far more challenging than she had anticipated. The building's outdated infrastructure and structural deficiencies posed significant obstacles, and many of her colleagues were skeptical about the project's feasibility. Despite the daunting task ahead, Emily remained determined to succeed. She spent countless hours studying blueprints, conducting research, and collaborating with her teammates to develop innovative solutions to the building's problems. During one particularly challenging phase of the project, when it seemed like progress had stalled, Emily volunteered to take on additional responsibilities. She proposed a new approach to addressing the building's structural issues, which involved using cutting-edge materials and construction techniques. Her proposal was met with skepticism at first, but Emily's confidence and passion won over her colleagues. Together, they implemented her ideas, overcoming obstacles and pushing the project forward. As the project neared completion, the once-dilapidated building was transformed into a sleek, modern office complex, complete with state-of-the-art sustainable features. The project garnered widespread acclaim within the industry, earning accolades for its innovative design and engineering solutions. Impressed by Emily's leadership and ingenuity, the firm's senior management offered her a promotion to lead future projects. With her newfound role, Emily continued to push the boundaries of sustainable architecture, leaving a lasting impact on the city's skyline and inspiring future generations of engineers. Years later, Emily looked back on her journey with pride. What had started as a daunting challenge had led her to a successful career at the forefront of engineering innovation, where she could make a tangible difference in the world. This story showcases the importance of perseverance, innovation, and teamwork in the field of engineering, highlighting how determination and passion can lead to success even in the face of daunting challenges. Have a great week. #Perseverance #Innovation #Opportunity #Resilience #Inspiration #Determination
