I will be at the SLAS (Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening) conference next week here in my hometown Boston. Here is what I am hoping to see: Evidence of an improving economy I see that attendance registrations are up 30% over 2023. For such an established conference, this is often a proxy indicator for an improving sector. It is certainly consistent with the improving US macroeconomic indicators. According to IMF world economic outlook from Jan 30, US growth for 2024 is now projected at 3.1%, a significant improvement over its Oct 2023 projection of 1.5%. It's also not far away from the 2000-2019 average of 3.8%. Notwithstanding some global risks to this growth such as the potential for conflict disrupting Red Sea and Persian Gulf trade routes, this growth is projected to strengthen into 2025. On the inflation front, the US Producer Price Index YoY (Dec 23) is now at 0.98%, compared to 6.42% last year. This is lower than the long term average of 2.61%. Such change, especially when combined with a stabilizing inflation outlook, is traditionally a strong leading indicator for positive investor sentiment and a resulting increase in project activity. As such, I am looking forward to speaking with industry stakeholders next week to get a confirmation of what we are seeing. Decentralization of Healthcare The US healthcare landscape continues to transform through the growth of technologies that allow healthcare to move closer to the patient such as direct-to-consumer telehealth, vertical integration of the retail healthcare sector, and entry from non-traditional players. Medical diagnostics is experiencing the same dynamics such as integration of digital health technologies and at-home patient interfacing. I will be looking for these technologies and how this change is affecting the many stakeholders across our industry. In summary, I predict that 2024 will be the start to an exciting period for the life science R&D and medical diagnostics industry. I am looking forward to seeing confirmation of this next week.
