You just bagged your seed or series A funding and think, "I need a VP of Sales!" Stop right there. This could be the worst decision you ever make. Here's why hiring a VP of Sales right out of the gate is a disastrous move: 1/ You Don't Need a Glorified Strategist 2/ Big Salaries for Big Talk 3/ VPs Aren’t Built for the Trenches 4/ Misplaced Priorities 5. VP of Sales don’t close 6/ Prove You Can Sell First In short, hiring a VP of Sales as your first sales hire is like trying to win a marathon by hiring a coach instead of running yourself. Get in the trenches, and close those deals, and build your revenue. Save the high-level hires for when you've actually got something to scale. Don't let a title fool you into thinking you're making progress.

Communicate what you want and put a timeline to it Wise words from a field director I work closely with. In sports, I feel this is more of a common conversation especially when you see contracts come up. But in corporate sales, I feel people are scared to have the conversation about this. The best thing you can do for your career is state what you want and when with your manager. - “Achieve field sales role in the next two years.” Then see how the conversation progresses. Does your manager begin to work with you to achieve that or do they ignore the conversation and go back to their normal 1:1s? Does your manager help you network to the right sales leaders? When the time comes, are you getting the opportunity to interview or are other people passing you up? If you have put in the work and achieved the needed results to move forward, you earned the opportunity for that shot. If not, actions speak louder than words. It may be time to look outward and see what’s available to you.

Sales leader doesn’t figure it out in the first 6 months? Fire em? What does it mean to “figure it out”... Hitting revenue targets that you drafted up on a spreadsheet? If you think hiring a vp of sales is your silver bullet to all revenue problems, there’s a good chance you’re wrong. If they aren’t smashing quota in the first 6 months, maybe take a more holistic view of what’s going on. I know quite a few sales leaders that saw little to no growth for 2,3,5 years then hit huge revenue targets, just here in Utah. Why are we so transactional with sales leaders sometimes?

I have a very good friend who was let go from his sales position this last month. He worked at a large SAAS firm here in Utah. He was a top paid rep at this company. His base and his OTE reflected his value. (And they canned him right before the holidays!) Letting your top sellers go right before or right as they’re closing big deals is becoming more and more common. That’s a solid way to - set yourself up for a lawsuit - get a really bad reputation (and yes, we salespeople talk on Glassdoor and RepVue) - Increase your turnover expenses - decrease your ability to drive revenue and ultimately exceed quota expectations. Letting top reps go because they’re “expensive” is stupid and fails to address the bigger picture. The issue isn’t your rep in most cases. It’s you. It’s your poor management. It’s your inability to plan well. It’s your own lack of leadership. It’s your own ignorance. It’s your lack of education. It’s your lack of empathy. It’s you. Not your reps. Solve the problem by getting rid of the **bottom performing rep(s)*** - and only after a PIP.
