Honored that the Boston College Law Review will publish my forthcoming law review article with Marc Edelman and John Holden titled, "(Still) Anticompetitive College Sports." Our article is on how the settlement for House v. NCAA—despite what you may hear—won't be a panacea to legal problems facing the NCAA and its treatment of college athletes. Excellent research assistance by UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law sports law student Cody Simonton on this article project. In practice, lawyers don't answer multiple choice questions or write essays without research. It's time for a more equitable licensure system that evaluates practical legal skills through methods like supervised practice. I look forward to continuing to advocate for a licensure system that assesses attorney skills in a manner that better protects the public while ensuring that employers hire graduates who are ready for the profession---all without imposing unnecessary financial burdens. #LicensureReform
Brian Gallini, the new dean of the Quinnipiac University School of Law, is a proponent of the Supervised Practice Portfolio Examination, a requirement in some law schools and jurisdictions for law graduates who seek to practice law. It is an alternative pathway to the traditional bar examination, designed to allow graduates to demonstrate their competency to practice law through supervised practice and the creation of a portfolio showcasing their legal skills, knowledge, and experience. Gallini has played a significant role in the implementation and development of the SPPE in Oregon. He has been a proponent of innovative legal education and bar admission practices, advocating for the SPPE as a means to better prepare law graduates for the practical demands of the legal profession. In my early days at the Faculty of Law, debates and moot competitions were my intellectual playground. I learnt how to craft compelling arguments, worked at mastering the art of legal advocacy, and each challenge served as a stepping stone in my professional growth. As I navigated through these arenas, relevance came not just from winning accolades but from the continuous pursuit of knowledge and refinement of skills. Several days ago, I was invited to judge, alongside two of my colleagues, in the Queens Moot Competition organised by Justice Udo Udoma Students' Chamber during their Law Ladies week, and the Philomath Gallery Debate hosted by the Justice Nsima Akpabio Chambers. Transitioning from an active participant to a judge is both an honor and a responsibility. It is a role that demands keen discernment, fairness, and a deep appreciation for the complexities of legal reasoning. Being on this other side -the bench- allowed me to contribute to the growth of new talents and to witness the next generation of law students unfold their potential. It was a humbling experience to assess the intellectual vigor and passion that each participant brought to the table. To all budding legal minds and debate enthusiasts: Your journey is not just about the wins, but the continuous pursuit of excellence. Embrace the challenges, learn from every experience, and let your passion for the law drive you forward! #lawstudent #lawschool #opportunities
