*Support flood relief in Brazil* You might have heard about the extreme flooding, deaths, and severe disruption in the lives of over a million people in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. It’s hard to know how to stay informed and to help if you live abroad, especially if you avoid the harms of the mainstream media. A friend and colleague who lives in the region — in spite of everything going on — created this website (literally overnight) for people outside of Brazil who would like to know more and/or help financially. You can learn about and/or make donations to organizations who are often invisibilized by the regular donor community: Indigenous groups, people helping local animals, and those providing meals for displaced and homeless people. At this site you can get local information and find out how to donate to groups that don't have big funding machines behind them. I made donations to every organization listed to make sure the links work for people outside Brazil. They might take a bit of extra clicking, but they all work. Help if you can. When the Pajaro River levee breached in March 2023, news organizations from across the country flocked to Pajaro to cover the disastrous flood. Thousands of Americans saw photos and footage of Pajaro residents wading through flooded streets. News organizations focused on the dramatic impact of winter storms on a working-class agricultural region. The problem was: This news was not useful — or even intended — for the residents. Most Pajaro residents speak Spanish or Mixteco. They needed clear information about evacuation orders and how to get government aid. That information was incredibly difficult to find. In July, Santa Cruz Local launched Noticias Watsonville, a local news division for the Pajaro Valley. It’s audio news, in Spanish and Mixteco, delivered for free on Whatsapp. We continually ask Watsonville area residents: What news and information do you need? How can our news be relevant for you? Half of our 16 audio episodes have been for Pajaro residents on flood recovery topics such as: - How to access aid.  - Upcoming government meetings on recovery and how to get involved. - Repairs to the levee. More than a year after the flood, we are the only news organization that remains in Pajaro, delivering critical news in Spanish and Mixteco and responding to residents’ needs. In the past few days, we received a $12,500 donation from Cristian Heredia to support Noticias Watsonville. Cristian is a Bay Area resident who wants Latino communities to get the news and information they need to thrive. Because Santa Cruz Local is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Cristian’s workplace was able to donate a matching gift. Cristian is one of Noticias Watsonville’s biggest supporters. In the past year, he’s donated $25,000 to grow Noticias Watsonville through his company’s charitable giving program. His support helped us build Spanish news for the Pajaro Valley. Urgent Call for Support: Flood Relief for Maiduguri Victims The recent flood that swept through major parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, has left behind a trail of destruction, displacing families and devastating communities. Homes have been destroyed, livelihoods lost, and thousands of people are now struggling to access basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. At EYN Projects, we are deeply saddened by the magnitude of this disaster and the suffering it has caused. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected communities, many of whom were already dealing with the aftermath of previous crises in the region. In response, EYN Projects is launching a relief effort to provide essential support to those affected by this catastrophe. As Hurricane Helene's devastating impact continues to be felt across several states, NATCA's Disaster Response Committee (DRC) has been working tirelessly to support affected members. The committee has successfully reached out to members in some of the hardest-hit areas, including Asheville ATCT (AVL), Augusta ATCT (AGS), and Greenville-Spartanburg ATCT (GSP). Supplies are being transported by air and ground, and the response effort is ongoing. Unfortunately, the need for assistance continues to grow. With roads still closed in North Carolina, volunteers and donations to the fund are essential in getting supplies to those in need. As flights and donations continue daily from facilities across the region, the DRC is urging members who can assist to volunteer or contribute to the relief effort.
