The data suggest that the winners from this incomplete rebound are the traditional gateways like Singapore and New York, which have cemented their roles as hubs by becoming even better connected. Delta Air Lines Inc and United Airlines Holdings Inc are operating even more direct flights than before the crisis from New York to major European destinations like London and Paris. Turkish Airlines is gearing up for significant expansions this year! The Istanbul-based carrier is all set to enhance its operations in Australia by the end of the year, contemplating either increased frequencies to Melbourne or the addition of a new route to Sydney. Additionally, Chairman Ahmet Bolat shared at the Farnborough Airshow that the airline is eyeing growth in Latin America, with plans to launch new routes to cities in Chile and Peru. British Airways and easyJet both announced new routes this week between the UK and Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia starting next summer. BA will fly from Heathrow while easyJet will operate from London Luton Airport. easyJet will also start flights to the Georgian capital from Genève Aéroport and SEA Milan Airports's Malpensa. It is worth recalling CONNECT Aviation - Route Development Forum held their annual event in Tbilisi back in 2018. Pre-pandemic the UK had non-stop flights to Georgia with Georgian Airways (from London Gatwick to Tbilisi) and Wizz Air (from Luton to Kutaisi International Airport. AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data shows that in August 2024 Wizz Air is the leading carrier between countries in the European Economic Area and Georgia, accounting for over half of all seat capacity. Other airlines offering non-stop flights to Georgia are Georgian Airways, Lufthansa, Aegean Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, airBaltic, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Transavia and Air France.

Turkish Airlines Launches Maiden Flight from Istanbul to Melbourne! ✈️ Turkish Airlines proudly celebrates the commencement of its inaugural commercial flight connecting Istanbul and Melbourne, marking its debut service to Australia. The journey commenced with the departure of the inaugural flight from Istanbul Airport (IST) at 5:30 PM on March 1. After a brief layover at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), it gracefully touched down at Melbourne Airport (MEL) around 8:40 PM on March 2. Operating thrice weekly, flights are scheduled to depart from Istanbul on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Initially operated with a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, Turkish Airlines will transition to a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from March 6, and subsequently, an Airbus A350-900 from early April. This milestone expansion underscores Turkish Airlines' commitment to enhancing its global network, now extending to six continents. Melbourne becomes the carrier's 346th destination and Australia its 130th country, making Turkish Airlines the sole European airline operating flights to Melbourne. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of Turkish Airlines, expressed his delight, stating, "Today marks a monumental milestone for Turkish Airlines, as we celebrate the realization of a long-held ambition – to extend our reach to the Australian continent." Lorie Argus, CEO of Melbourne Airport, lauded the arrival of Turkish Airlines, anticipating benefits for consumers. "Increased competition helps put downward pressure on prices, ensuring Victorian residents and businesses can stay connected with family, friends, and clients worldwide." Looking ahead, Turkish Airlines plans to expand its footprint in Australia, with plans to launch a service to Sydney (SYD) by year-end. Furthermore, with the introduction of ultra-long-range A350-1000 aircraft, the airline aims to commence nonstop flights between Istanbul and Australia in 2026. ✈️Two weeks ago Condor Flugdienst GmbH announced launch of the previously unserved nonstop route between Frankfurt and Phuket, starting in September 2024. I used our Lufthansa Systems NetLine/Plan network planning tool to take a closer look on traffic flow changes on this O&D. ⚙️NetLine/Plan is an industry-leading tool, used by 20+ airlines globally, as well as various OEMs and consultancies, that supports decision making related to airline #networkplanning. It forecasts load-factors, as well as profitability, based on worldwide schedules and market size as well as revenue and cost data. It can analyze global impact of any schedules adjustment, including traffic flow changes, pre- and post-change. Also, it does it really fast, transparent and accurate. 📊Using global market size data powered by #travelport and Winter 24/25 schedules it seems that the new nonstop will likely divert ca. 20% of traffic that currently flies via the hubs in the Middle East. On top of that, both Singapore and Hong Kong might face significantly lower transit figures. Bangkok hub would see the lowest proportional negative impact. Please note that for the pure demonstration purposes, I did not include local market stimulation effect in the estimates. While this effect, once applied, would reduce the negative impacts across the hubs, most likely the directionality of changes would remain largely unchanged. What do you think about the outcome? Ezy Airlines is newly launched for high-spending local travelers in Thailand. “Ezy Airlines” has implemented various technologies and innovations to address the challenges of time and complexity in the pre-departure process. This aligns with the five-year investment promotion strategy (2023 – 2027) with the vision of “Promoting Investment to Restructure the Thai Economy into a New Economy consisting of Innovation, Competitive and Inclusive. Ezy Airlines will initially have only two pilots, without flight attendants or food service which use Caravan Ex with 12 seats to operate a one-hour flight, focusing on domestic flights in the South. Royal Brunei Airlines has announced it will purchase four Boeing 787 Dreamliners to renew its widebody fleet. Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is adding to the Triangle’s international reach with new Copa Airlines and Lufthansa flights. The flights connect the Triangle to thriving international cities, with Copa Airlines' flight from Panama City, Panama, and Lufthansa’s flight to Frankfurt, Germany. These new flights have come after RDU announced it set a new monthly record for passenger traffic in May. The airport saw 1.4 million passengers pass through its terminals, 10.5 percent above April’s traffic numbers and 9.7 percent above last May’s metrics. Last year, RDU added four new airlines, 25 new destinations and 49 new additional routes and were the fastest growing airport in the top 50 airports in the United States with a 22% increase in passenger traffic over 2022.
