Good afternoon network, Today I attended an event held by Linklaters presenting “how to smash your vacation scheme” by recruiter Hannah Shields and recent vacation scheme candidates: Matthew Samm, Damilola Adekunle, Shakhed Mor, Natalia Neuber. It was a wonderful event for me to take part in and get any questions that I had about vacation schemes answered. As a first year law student I feel well prepared for submitting my first application for a vacation scheme, with the help and advice from all the vacation scheme candidates. It had enlightened me with advice such as: -Researching the firm, and your practice of interest. -Have a pre-vacation scheme diary to refer to during your vacation scheme. -Build connections with other trainees, your partner, your principal, and your team. -Leverage who you are, do not be scared to be yourself. -Make checklists of questions you want to be answered. -Revise your knowledge before going into meetings to get the best outcome. -Don’t worry about making mistakes on a piece of work, it’s the attitude and dedication that matters. I would like to thank everyone involved for holding such an insightful event.

This year, my family and I sprinted out of summer straight into fall. Instead of Labor Day being the final beach day of the season before easing into fall, as is our typical pattern and the habit of so many New Englanders, we spent Labor Day traveling home from a wonderful vacation in Croatia (including a literal sprint through the Dublin airport, when a flight delay on the first leg of our trip home almost made us miss our flight to Logan). On Tuesday my husband and I were back to work, and on Wednesday our son started second grade. On Wednesday morning, it was a cool 58 degrees where we live. I wore a long sleeve shirt on my run for the first time since April, which really made it feel like fall. Before I fully leave summer behind though, I’m reflecting on three lessons that were really driven home for me this summer: 1. In-house lawyers need to plan ahead and aim to be proactive, but include in their plans the possibility of revising or discarding the plan. This year, my team anticipated and planned ahead for a very busy June and July, followed by a slower August. The slower August didn’t happen, and that’s ok because we built flexibility into our systems, and because we didn’t burn ourselves out in anticipation of a slower period (we still rested when we were busy). 2. Taking breaks and having summer adventures isn’t just for kids -it's good for adults too! It's obviously great personally, and it lets you bring your most effective self to your work as well. This summer, I worked a number of 50+ hour weeks, followed by weekends with little to no work and time to explore. We went to the beach, camping, and to visit friends. I am entering fall ready to dive back into a continued busy period partially because of those weekends and our wonderful late summer vacation. 3. Giving your time to supporting others is highly energizing, even when you are busy. With law students on break for summer, I had dozens of mentoring conversations and attended a number of mentorship events this summer. Even when I was so busy I wondered whether rescheduling would have been more responsible, I came out of those conversations energized rather than exhausted. What did this summer drive home for you? Did you sprint into fall, or ease into it?

Vacation Planning & Managing Academics Balancing vacation planning with academics is very important. It is essential to prioritize studies and ensure that travel doesn't coincide with academic sessions. It involves proper organizing and prioritizing schedule effectively. Holidays should be identified with the help of academic calender and use those holidays for travel without hampering academic sessions. We should communicate with professors about our plans, and ensure that we complete any necessary work in advance. Prior to going for vacations, one must follow a schedule that allows you to complete the respective academic tasks in advance. After ensuring that no academics are harmed, one can allow himself to go on vacations and spend quality time and relax himself. Shripad Bhatlawande Sir, Vishwakarma Institute Of Technology
