💭 Reflecting on a brilliant Peabody 'Lunch and Learn' session organised by our LGBTQIA+ Network with Polly Shute for Pride Month. Polly shared some really practical takeaways on how to be an ally at work, so I thought I'd share my key takeaways: 💡 Get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Things are often uncomfortable if they are different, lean in further and continue to engage rather than pulling away. 💡 Respect first, politics second. Having different views isn't a bad thing, but it is important to separate humanness with politics to prevent 'othering' those who are 'different'. 💡 Treat others how THEY would like to be treated, not how YOU would like to be. This encourages you to understand what that looks like for other people and how we are not all the same. 💡 Choosing empathy over sympathy is a vulnerable choice as it means we have to connect with something within ourselves that knows that feeling. Finally, leaving this video here as it had a poignant impact on me, creating a feeling of discomfort but pushing through to lean into the challenge of listening, engaging and challenging your biases - beer not essential. Dear Brands, First things first, slapping a few vernacular words on a post is not cute. If you want to speak to "us" stop doing it in a distasteful manner. Stop letting middle-aged caucasian men have the final say on the creative. If you hire black creatives, allow them the space to be creative! Care about the people that you are speaking to! Also GIVE BACK to our communities, slapping a branded board at a Tuckshop or Shabeen just doesn't cut it. People in the township are educated, we have bigger fish to fry to get through our day. Also giving us the bare minimum is just a slap in the face which is why we will never be loyal because you don't understand "us". Do better! My nan is celebrating 99 years young today! 🎂 We're four generations strong, and the anticipation for that royal birthday card in a year is making her very excited! 👑 As we celebrate it got me thinking about the valuable lessons I've learnt from her over the years. One thing in particular - telling a story! She has told many stories from her days in the land army to being a farmers wife on the Devonshire farm. Reflecting on this, stories are important in our businesses too! They create an emotional connection between your brand and your audience. When people can relate to a story, they are more likely to connect with your brand on a personal level. Emotions drive consumer behaviour, and stories are a powerful way to evoke emotions, build trust and feel more connected. I'm embarking on a journey to add another chapter to my personal story this year. We're on a mission to connect with my nan 100 times this year—sharing stories, laughter, and creating memories. Here are our tips: 📅 Know your audience: If it's not relevant to them, they won't engage. Celebrating #NationalHugYourPetDay at a pet store is perfect! But at a hair salon? Maybe not. 📅 Consider the day's history: Established days get more traction. Look for ones with a solid track record for better engagement and potential newsjacking opportunities. 📅 Stay local: Make sure the day aligns with your audience's location. Celebrating an American day when you're UK-based? Your audience might not get it. Stick to UK or global days for maximum engagement. Choose wisely and mark your calendars for the days that suit you best! 🎉
