Since 1997, the NKOS Workshop has been a forum for the presentation, discussion, and improvement of work on the application of knowledge organization systems (KOS) in information services. The next Workshop will be held at the International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications (DCMI2024) on Sunday, October 20 from 9:00AM-5:00PM EDT in Toronto, Canada. Participation can be in person or virtual. The workshop will include demonstrations of working applications and prototypes in action, pre-recorded “live” demos, and the evaluation of results from applications. The demonstrations are organized into four groups—large language models (LLMs), knowledge graphs, machine learning (ML), and AI and KOS. The fee for in-person participation is included in your DCMI 2024 registration or is $150 for just the NKOS Workshop (registration fee increases after September 19.) I was curious what we could learn if we visualized the conference agendas for a handful of #edtech conferences over the past 30 years. If we could somehow get all the session titles and descriptions for many conferences like #ASUGSV and others, could you find insights about the patterns of the past as predictive of the next 1-3 years? Would you be able to visualize the emergence, popularity, or decay of focus areas like: adaptive learning, personalized learning, open educational resources, moocs, personal portfolios, and most recently AI or genAI? How could we model out the emotional urgency of the talk titles and descriptions? What about year over year talk similarity or changes in a focus area over time? Would the analysis tell us anything interesting about whether the prevalence of AI talks in 2024 is different somehow or more dominating a topic of conversation? It seems a difficult task to do this for many conferences and many years, but I did find it interesting that approximately (since I didn't bother fully cleaning up the data) 27% of the ASU+GSV Summit talks in 2024 mention 'AI', 'genAI', 'artificial', or 'intelligence' specifically in their titles alone! 🚀 📈 😳

🤖 Generative AI Essentials: Introducing your digital colleague 🤖 So proud to bring my passion for Generative AI to the national level in the Netherlands! GenAI is transforming work, and research management is no exception. At last week's ARMA - NL annual conference, more than 40 research managers and administrators (RMAs) joined our workshop on foundational GenAI skills (with my partners in crime Ayla Kruis, MSc and Tse-Hsiang Chen, PhD). Here are some key takeaways: 1️⃣ GenAI requires a mindset shift: Unlike other technologies, it's not just about learning new tools, but about adapting our approach to work. 2️⃣ Hands-on learning: Participants practiced interacting with GenAI and identifying opportunities to use it in their daily work. 3️⃣ Responsible use: As always, we emphasize the importance of using GenAI ethically and mitigating bias and risk. I'm always amazed at the level of engagement with these sessions, with discussions spilling over into the coffee break and the train ride home. And this is just the beginning. We want to prepare all RMAs for the future of the profession. How will we do that? By making this workshop and training materials available to RMAs at institutions across the Netherlands. Through the ARMA-NL GenAI Working Group, we will soon start "training the trainers", so that other enthusiastic RMAs can teach their colleagues to leverage GenAI.
