The latest data on Closing the Gap has been released and shows that we’re making some progress. Encouragingly, the proportion of First Nations babies born at a healthy birth weight has improved and is on track to meet the target of 91 per cent by 2023. And the target of a 15% increase in land and sea country covered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ legal rights is also on track. Overall, this means that 5 out of the 19 targets are on track. But there’s been no improvement in closing the gap on life expectancy, the target to reduce the number of children in out of home care is not on track, and the target to reduce adult imprisonment is not on track and worsening. Millions of Australians want the gap to close. Our Government is committed to strengthening efforts to work with communities to close the gap and improve life outcomes, here’s how. Just last month we announced a range of new measures under our Closing the Gap strategy. This includes creating 3,000 jobs in remote communities, a national commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People, and continuing funding for the Justice Policy Partnership. This builds on our significant investments in improving the lives of Indigenous Australians since we came to government. But it’s clear from the latest data that there is still a long way to go. Our Government will work with local communities to make a difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

With an election on the horizon and a home care program still in development, now is the critical time to advocate for stronger support for home care. The proposed Support at Home model risks creating a two-tiered care system, where high-quality services are only available to those who can afford them. Under the current proposal, lower funding levels for home-based care could drive older Australians toward residential care just to have their needs met—a result that stands in direct conflict with the Royal Commission's recommendations and the goal of supporting ageing at home. Join me in sharing Invox’s open letter, urging the government to uphold the Royal Commission’s recommendation: home care funding should be on par with residential care, ensuring equitable, high-quality care for all older Australians. #qualitycare #homecare #agedcare #supportathome https://lnkd.in/gxWUvD-h

Today, is the 34th International Day of Older Persons. The theme, 'Aging with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support System' echoes the needs of older Australians across the country, particularly those using the services of aged care and seniors housing. It is a good day to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the people who are working to build a robust and sustainable aged care system, focused on delivering a high level of care for older Australians. #ACCPA, #InternationalDayofOlderPesons, #AgedCare, #AustralianAgedCare, #VisitorManagementSystem, #VisitorSignInSystem,

Interesting article about the shocking cost of child care (yes, it's more than college tuition!) and some of the solutions being explored. We're fortunate to be a dual income household, but with three small kids, childcare is still our largest monthly expense by a lot. More than our mortgage, car and home insurance, real estate tax, and utilities combined. I'd be interested to see more companies take on solving this problem much like they have stepped into the space of providing paid family leave.
Any downplaying of the economic burden of child care is peak gaslighting. There needs to be a stronger commitment from the next president that sees child care as one of the top priorities their administration needs to fix for families, period. Thank you for writing about this bipartisan issue, Kelsey Butler Bloomberg News Read more here: https://lnkd.in/epwq27X4
