How many of you work with volunteers? In organisations and businesses, a clear dynamic is created on the premise of 'you give what we need of you in exchange for money'. However, when you remove that structure and ask people to 'donate' their time you enter a strange, apologetic landscape. I find it fascinating. I don't believe in true altruism - there is always a benefit to be found for ourselves when we do things for others and I believe that is a good thing. I think it evolved to be there because we need each other. If you are going to volunteer, or run a project that uses volunteers, take the time to get clear about what everyone is getting from it. Volunteer projects get stuff done - they are an empowering way of achieving things locally that don't require us to wait for permission. However, I would encourage people to be upfront about their motivations for volunteering, it makes for a happier, healthier team. There is nothing wrong with reciprocity. In the last week, I have met some wonderful, talented volunteers who have inspired and motivated me - I'm clear about how I have benefitted from Peter Walker's public art project 'Buttons'. #volunteering #publicart

Due to the busyness during the Christmas holidays, we decided to have our volunteers IT Teachers' get-together in January. Although not everyone could make it, we did have fun, appreciating the diverse skills and culture we share, whilst forging stronger connections. Why do people volunteer with us? Volunteering is not just about giving your time and skills; it is about appreciating the essence of helping others, bringing a deep sense of gratitude and acknowledgment. At Sovereign House GH, we appreciate the diversity and richness of our communities. By working with volunteers, enhancing confidence and tapping into diverse skills, we gain a deeper understanding of others' experiences. This appreciation fosters empathy, tolerance, and trust for the users, volunteers and the charity. Volunteering brings positive change to others, whilst experiencing personal growth, developing new skills, expanding our knowledge base, building meaningful connections with like-minded individuals, and gaining a sense of purpose. Each individual holds the power to make a difference in their community. It is through these acts of kindness that we truly understand the profound impact we can have on another's life. I’m sure I’m not the only one in this boat. When you tell people that community engagement gives you joy or that you love volunteering, the way they look at you is often puzzling ,like, "What are you saying? Volunteering doesn’t pay; it can’t put food on your table." I just give them my bombastic eye, thinking, "You just can’t understand." 😄 But I know many of you do understand. Quick mum update... Mum is about to surpass 3 full days of volunteering!! That is 72 hours dedicated to improving the lives of older people in her community 🥹 #BemorelikeDebby I love getting a message like this from my wonderful mum. She throws on her Volunteero merch to make her weekly calls to the older people she befriends!! 💜 When we started Volunteero, Mum jumped at the opportunity to volunteer for one of our clients... partly to support me but also partly because she had always considered volunteering but never actually managed it. Mum is not alone. I speak to people daily who say they want to volunteer but always the reasons for not doing so are the same: 1. Don't know where to get started 🤔 2. Worried it won't be flexible 🤯 3. The process is poor 🫣 This is exactly why we do what we do. We want to get the world volunteering and we want the impact of volunteering to be higher by empowering volunteers to do more! p.s. if you wonder what she is on about when talking about my dad, he spends his days investigating conspiracy theories on some sketchy TV channels. #volunteering
