I want to share this video for two reasons. One, I think this program is absolutely terrific. Two, often times in the development world, we talk about outputs vs. outcomes and how we report back to the philanthropists that are supporting our work. This video is an amazing example of reporting on outcomes. This program is changing lives. It is so simple to see how important the CHEFS program is to the participants who have chosen to share their stories. Compare this to a written report you might get from another organization that tells you "60 individuals graduated from our workforce development program this year." Which has more impact on you? Which makes you want to support a program?

Embracing a kind heart and cheering on others’ successes is really important for a strong, tight-knit community. It’s all about making a space where we’re happy for each other’s wins, without feeling jealous or like we’re in a race against each other. It’s about realizing that when one person wins, it doesn’t mean someone else loses. This way of thinking is kind of like a boomerang – you support others, and that support comes back to you. It builds a community where everyone’s rooting for each other. I’ve seen this firsthand as an American Red Cross Disaster Volunteer. Seeing other volunteers go above and beyond during tough times is super inspiring. When someone does something amazing in disaster relief, it’s not just their win – it’s a win for all of us. It shows that cheering for your team today doesn’t take away from what you do. Instead, it creates a vibe where everyone works together, and we all get stronger. So, keeping a generous spirit and being happy for others isn’t just nice – it makes the whole community better. It’s like lifting others up as you climb, knowing you’re part of something that celebrates everyone’s achievements, big and small. #communityspirit #teamworkmatters #supportivenetwork #celebratingsuccess #unityindiversity

Disasters, both natural and human-caused, can be devastating for Black and other communities that often exist in marginalized spaces that contend with historical injustice and systemic inequities. Extreme stress and trauma are common experiences post-disaster layering on top of pre-existing challenges. This is why All Healers Mental Health Alliance (AHMHA) exists - to facilitate culturally grounded assistance to people affected by crises from Hurricane Katrina to Superstorm Sandy, to the Flint Water Crisis, to the Buffalo Massacre, to the Mississippi tornadoes, and the Maui Wildfires. AHMHA does its work by collaborating with Black and other communities of color, the Black Resilience Network, FEMA, and other organizations and agencies to identify resources to support disaster preparedness, response, and recovery and to promote mental health and emotional well-being, safety, connectedness, and holistic thriving.

Union Family, SMART-TD Local 610 is having its first-ever community outreach event at Arlington National Cemetery 1 Memorial Ave. Arlington, Virginia 22211. We would love to see as many participants as possible because if it is several of us or just one of us, we are showing that the Labor Movement and the 610 shows up and gives back, especially when it comes to veterans. Arlington National Cemetery will not require registration of each volunteer for National Wreaths Across America Day in 2023. There will be two dates for this community outreach. The wreath for placement for volunteers will be on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 12:00 pm (Wreath Placement Beginning at 8:00 am), and a cleanup date will be forwarded in the future. Understandably, we all have commitments this holiday season, and this location may not be around the block. However, there will be multiple wreath-laying ceremonies throughout the country on this date. So Local 610 challenges everybody hearing this message to volunteer and donate to Wreaths Across America. This year alone, labor has shown that we can successfully organize nationally when help is needed. Since this is our Local’s first official community outreach, we would love as much local and national support as possible for this cause. Understandably, there are many volunteer opportunities during this time of the year, and you may already be stretched thin. However, it is better to have many volunteer opportunities to choose from than to overwhelm one. Hope to see you there. During Black History Month, we are spotlighting a few of the many Red Crossers whose dedication help advance the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross. Today, we are excited to highlight Pierre Nkundabemera, Disaster Program Manager for the Illinois Red Cross. Pierre works daily to help the Quad Cities and West Central Illinois communities prepare for, respond to and rebuild from local disasters including home fires, flooding and more. "Everything is about meeting the basic needs of the people when they need it most. Once we are able to meet these needs, we can then meet specific needs related to the situation they are in, their vulnerability and many other factors." Pierre grew up in the Eastern African Country of Rwanda where he first got involved volunteering for the local Red Cross Club in high school at the age of 14. Before joining the Red Cross, he served in other humanitarian roles in Somalia, Central African Republic and Mali. When asked what #BlackHistoryMonth means to him, Pierre shared, "It means that I'm recognized as a person and I'm not just a number. I'm a human being who has a rich history to share in this country. The United States is different because we have diversity. I think you can look at diversity as a challenge, and there are challenges to that, but in a lot of ways it's actually an opportunity." We thank Pierre for the important work that he provides to the Red Cross and his dedication to serving those in need. This is violent colonization in a trajectory of other violent colonization that deemed indigenous bodies inhuman and therefore not deserving of life, land or respect, much less burial grounds, sacred spaces or lands of origin.   “I am so thrilled that I get to see this in my lifetime. We have all fought and worked for so long, and this is truly beautiful,” said Ruth Orta, an 89-year-old elder Ohlone mama and grandmama and daughter of a survivor of the Colonial boarding schools. Imagine the cemetery where your family is buried being turned into a parking lot. This powerFULL moment of indigenous land return is the intersection of many things. It’s about the colonial violence of having to buy back your ancestors’ resting place, your sacred spaces where our ancestors are buried, which all humans deserve. It is about the violence of krapitalist greed and real-esnaking and the lie of private property causing the casual (yet intentional) genocide of erasure, removal and desecration of not only a burial ground but a sacred site that is thousands of Gregorian years old. And finally the settler violence of greed, hoarding and accumulation that would put an insane, almost unimaginable “price” on Mama Earth and deign to charge the peoples whose lands of origin this land belongs to, whose lands we are all standing, sitting, dreaming, thinking, buying and selling billions of blood-stained colonial dollars just to get it back. And for all the CONfused settlers reading this, LandBack does not mean re-making the same settler violence that was perpetrated on First Peoples of scarcity and removal and incarceration and death. This moment is a testament to the deep structures of ancestors who never believed Mama Earth was for sale. Who never saw her as a commodity to be extracted from and desecrated. Who never believed or would allow the violence of homelessness, who lived the values of what us houseless, pan-indigenous peoples at POOR Magazine call Homefulness. Who were never rooted in the violence of scarcity but rather the solutions of sharing and interdependence. Like indigenous peoples all over the world practice. If one relative has a job or food to eat, everyone eats. If one person has water, everyone drinks. If one family has a roof, like we do at Homefulness, as many people as possible are housed for free. For life.'

We’re pleased to see Launch Housing's initiative, which urges Melburnians to strive towards ending homelessness by 2030. Homelessness is a pressing issue in our city, especially given our ranking as the fifth most unaffordable housing market in the English-speaking world (Benchmarking Melbourne 2023 report https://lnkd.in/gCQxN-Am). Because of this, the Committee is focused on the importance of addressing housing supply and the shortage of affordable housing.
