🏛️ Exciting News for City of Independence, Missouri! 🌟 Dear LinkedIn community, I'm thrilled to share with you the preliminary ideas for a crucial General Obligation in Independence. The city is facing over $1 billion in deferred maintenance, and a proposed bond package of $250 million could be the key to addressing these pressing needs. Here's a glimpse of how the funds would be allocated: 💰 Street Reconstruction: $60 million to address 20% of our total lane miles in the city. 🌉 Bridge and Culvert Repairs: $15 million to repair or replace 14 bridges and 97 culverts. 🚶♂️ Curbs and Sidewalks: $20 million to tackle up to 66 miles of curbs or 175 miles of sidewalks. 🏰 Historic Sites: $10 million for much-needed repairs to preserve this beloved community treasures. 🌳 Park Improvements: $20 million for trail repairs, updated playgrounds, and the revitalization of assets like George Owens Nature Park. 🏡 Community Center: $75 million for a long-awaited facility recommended since the 2002 Parks Master Plan. 🚔 Justice Center: $42 million to consolidate all Independence MO Police Department functions on one campus at the city's geographic center. 🐾 Animal Shelter: $5 million for acquisition and renovation of the regional animal shelter. 🏢 Public Buildings: $3 million for addressing other public building maintenance needs. The financial commitment is significant, but the impact on the community is immeasurable. The plan estimates a cost of $22.26 per month for the median homeowner, equivalent to enjoying 5 soft pretzels and 5 fountain drinks at Quick Trip once a month. Congrats to our friend Rocket on his Ted Talk "Vermont: The Value of Hardship" for TEDx Hartland Hill's series, The Art of Living! What a refreshing take on the inherent BENEFITS of hardship: innovation, accountability, and cooperation - these are KEY qualities of Vermont living! Here at BRIC in Springfield, we're acutely and continuously aware of the myriad of challenges that rural life presents in the face of our community development efforts. If we're being honest, the list of obstacles and setbacks we encounter day to day often feels endless - like pushing a boulder up hill (both ways!) in the snow. Anyone boots on the ground doing this type of work knows it's not for the faint of heart, and in fact we often joke that you have to be a certain sort of glutton for punishment in order to ever actually make any progress. We know what we're doing is difficult, and that we're pushing against the odds with the things we're trying to accomplish - and somehow this awareness actually BOLSTERS our determination. The spirit of resilience and ingenuity is STRONG in Vermont. It's an inherent part of our identity. Whether it's snowstorms, early frosts, catastrophic flooding, workforce and housing shortages, food insecurity, busted leaking pipes - whatever the hurdle, Vermonters SHOW UP. We imagine possibilities, we work together, and we GET SHIT DONE. In spite of the challenges, there's nowhere we'd rather be! The Mt. Joy Orchard in Portland is so cool.
