I like to start a new year with some good luck and participate in having the traditional New Year’s Day meal of Hoppin’ John, cornbread, and collard greens. 🤤 I also like to take some time to reflect back on the previous year.  Thinking about 2023 a few professional highlights came to mind. Namely, my Authority Magazine interview, and getting named Chair of the American Staffing Association’s IDEAs Council, but I’m most proud of YUPRO Placement launching our #SkillsFirstJobsNow campaign and Skills-to-Staff™ Professional Apprenticeship Program. While 2023 was not without its challenges, it's the bright spots that truly defined our year. Our journey has been marked by the dedication of our talent, proving time and again that skills are the true currency in today's job market. Our mission-aligned training provider partner network grew significantly, focusing on building the skills for the workforce of tomorrow while collaborating with us to connect their graduates with job opportunities at America's top companies. Our employer partners' commitment to embracing diverse talent and investing in human potential has been a driving force behind this progress. As we reflect on the year, it's clear that these collective efforts have set a new standard for how we address the complex hiring needs of today and the future. Last week, we shared how work-based learning opportunities open the door for students to explore different pathways and save both time and money in pursuit of a career. To be successful, these opportunities require employer engagement, which costs both time and money. So, what's in it for them? We're glad you asked! For starters, these connections provide employers the chance to create the talent pipeline they need. Instead of lamenting that new hires don't have certain skills, employers can tell students ahead of time what they're looking for. There are far more pathways to success than simply "I have to go to University", employers for entry-level candidates look for 3 things: 1) How hungry are you to learn & develop. 2) How aspirational are you. 3) How hard are you willing work to get there. 1000s of Apprentices DROP OUT every year! 🚨 Yes, according to recent research, at least 47% of apprentices in the UK dropout before completing their programs. I recently read a blog by Megan Thomas, who shared her early career experience online. She dove into various early careers settings and it was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. "Some were amazing, where they encouraged me to contribute in meetings, and considered my ideas. I’d have 1:1 support and they genuinely wanted to help me succeed in my future career”. But others left her on the verge of quitting, multiple times. This isn’t an unique story. So why do they risk it all and drop out? Well…there are many reasons but I’ll name two: ❌ Lack of support from training providers and firms  ❌ Employer-tutor communication gap The message is clear: Provide the RIGHT support and RESOURCES to your early career professionals. As mentioned by Megan, that can be 1:1 support sessions.
