What's special about smaller festivals? Why do we love the smaller folk festivals over the 40,000+ pax mega-events? One big plus is that we're not in a concrete stadium or jostling for a view of the stage with thousands of others, but in the beautiful location of the Cobargo Showground, surrounded by mountains, wide open skies and just a short drive away from some of the best beaches in the world. But the best of it is that small festivals create a unique connection between the artist and the audience. Unlike larger festival stages or stadium shows, where the artist is just a speck in the distance, we bring performers and audience together in more intimate performance settings. The closeness creates a very special vibe and allows a deeper personal connection between artist and audience. Audiences become active supporters - a role that goes beyond just enjoying the music but involves actively engaging with the artist's work. The voice of the artist is unfiltered (no vocalizers!). And, at a time when streaming platforms dominate, live performance is a much more vulnerable, human experience. Ticket sales and associated merchandise sales throughout the event provide a more tangible and direct source of income, allowing artists to continue creating music and to maintain creative control over their work. People have written theses about the benefits of supporting small festivals, live music and the benefits for community connectedness and resilience but the best thing to do is come and see for yourself, especially if you've never done a smaller festival before. Festivals Chinese festivals can be classified into two types according to the dates on which the festivals fall. The dates of one type are determined according to the solar calendar and the other---traditional festivals---in accordance with the Chinese lunar calendar. Traditional Festivals and Customs The Spring Festival The Spring Festival is the most important festival in China. The Chinese people usually call the Spring Festival GuoNian (过年). It is also known as the Chinese New Year’s Day and used to be called YuanDan (元旦), which means the first morning of a year. To Chinese people, the first day of a year starts, in a real sense, from the Spring Festival. When is the Spring Festival? The dates of most Chinese traditional festivals are determined according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Being the Chinese New Year’s Day, the Spring Festival is therefore the first day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar. However, the date which each Spring Festival falls on varies in the solar calendar. For example, the Spring Festival of 2018 fell on February 16 in the solar calendar, while in 2017, it was on January 28. The evening and night before the Spring Festival is called “Chinese New Year's Eve”. This is when family members gather together for a huge feast known as a Family Reunion Dinner. After the meal, the whole family generally sit together in the living room, having fun and enjoying each other’s company, while watching the special Spring Festival Gala on TV to welcome the New Year. Around midnight, it gets exciting and noisy as people set off firecrackers to close out the old year and see in the new. Playing a New Year's call is an important custom for the Spring Festival period. Traditionally, people visit relatives and friends from the first day of the lunar year to exchange New Year's greetings. The 'Festival Cities and Regions Workshop' at the European Festivals Association Arts Festivals Summit 2024 on Usedom brought together festival makers and city and region representatives to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the arts, festivals and their territories. Key conclusions included: 🌟The need to facilitate the conditions for more cooperation and dialogue between the cities, regions and their festivals. 🌟 The notion of ‘experiment’ and how festivals can be considered organisations and laboratories for new thinking that are building knowledge on the people and the territory. Festivals offer their local authorities insights about their inhabitants that go beyond statistics. 🌟The need for arts and culture to be more assertive on cultural policies to distinguish festivals’ artistic value from just touristic revenue and highlight their broader contribution to their communities. Sustainability stays high on the agenda also for the cities: what are local policies and measures that address sustainability in festivals? More on these findings later. This workshop was organised in partnership with “A Soul for Europe” and is embedded in the EFFE Seal for Festival Cities and Regions Initiative which aims to offer a platform for cities, regions and festivals alike to discuss knowledge, practices and policies from local to European level and back.

Well, the 68th #UKCoachRally and #nationalcoachweek 2024 are both over. Our thanks in all directions to all CPT members who came to participate and to our #BCH partner ABTOT Limited. But we can't miss the chance here to stress that for CPT's coaching members, every week is coach week. One high profile illustration of this is how, in just over a month, nearly 20K festival goers will enjoy convenient and affordable travel to #Glastonbury Festival by coach (20% more reaching the summer’s biggest music festival travel this way than they did last year). Official coach travel partner of the festival, National Express LTD has added 34 more departures this year to meet demand, taking the total number of locations served to 109. Tickets include a generous luggage allowance of 20kg in the hold, plus one piece of soft hand luggage. National Express also sets up a pop-up coach station within 100 metres of the festival gates, so revellers haven’t got far to go with their festival gear to secure the best spots to pitch-up. Alongside regional coach services, there will also be a fleet of double decker electric buses on a high-frequency shuttle #bus service between #Bristol Bus Station and Worthy Farm. As we've said here many times, coach is good for the environment as the least carbon-intensive public transport option. So it's encouraging to learn that John Boughton, commercial director at National Express can say, “Demand for affordable and reliable public transport has never been greater, and that includes travel to the summer’s hottest festivals and events." Already, 50 UK festivals have announced they will either postpone, cancel, or completely shut down in 2024. Without immediate intervention, we could see the number of lost festivals exceed 100 this year due to rising and unpredictable costs. In early February, the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) launched the "5% For Festivals" campaign, advocating for a temporary VAT reduction on festival tickets to prevent more closures. This campaign aimed to raise awareness among festival-goers about the challenges faced by promoters over the past five years and encouraged them to lobby their MPs for support. However, the campaign is currently on hold as the country prepares for a general election. The solution is clear: the UK Government needs to provide temporary relief by reducing VAT on ticket sales from 20% to 5% for the next three years. This would give festival promoters the breathing room they need to recover and continue offering vibrant cultural events.
