❗ A lot has been going on in the background to line up the next several roundtable events. As we work through approvals with companies like Meta, Microsoft, DoorDash, LinkedIn and others, I'd like to have two other in-house companies join me and a representative from British Airways in an upcoming experimentation roundtable event. 🛩 Who? Preferably folks in the B2C space, with e-commerce and/or travel and hospitality experience. If that's you, or if you know someone who might be interested, either comment below or DM me and I'll schedule an intro/discovery call with you. 🙌 While we're at it, there are a couple of things that are changing with upcoming roundtable events: 1. VIDEO In the past, I've recapped learnings in my newsletter but haven't shared video recordings of our conversations. Moving forward, I will be sharing the recordings in my newsletter and clips leading up to it here on my personal profile. I might add to Spotify, YouTube, etc. in the future but haven't thought that far in advance yet. 2. FORMAT Some future participants have been asking about format. My answer has been...it depends. If you're an in-house brand that would like to learn from others in the industry or learn about a specific topic, then a group conversation with 2-3 others like the one I'm organizing with British Airways is a great format. But if you're part of an advanced program, like the other brands I mentioned above, then I'd like to conduct 1:1 interviews with you around specific topics (eg. causal inference, advanced experimentation techniques, alternative A/B testing methods, governance at large scale, etc.) If either of these formats interest you, please reach out to discuss. 👉 If you're not already subscribed, here's the link to do so. How to make a case competition feel and look like a fun company outing? Ask Carambole! We did a bombastic workshop together with WeTransfer back in 2019! I am sure most of you know this name because almost everyone at some point had to move a very large file around. It had an innovative concept because it was created at the intersection of a fun game and a business case competition. On the one hand, it had all the elements of a fun company outing: a cool venue, mingling with your colleagues and having fun together, lots of drinks, and delicious chocolate; but on the other hand, it was also a real business situation where expertise, collaboration, creative thinking, and presentation skills came in handy. Competing that day was worth it because, of course, there was a prize - a whole 1 kilogram of the highest quality craft chocolate from Krak! Basically, it was a full-cycle chocolate production in the form of friendly competition. 5 teams with 10 people in each team were creating a concept for a new chocolate, and it was quite a challenge: how to come up with a custom taste, an attractive packaging, and an idea that would resonate with the judges and beat other teams' ideas and execution? First and foremost, all the team should be made of team members with various skill sets. A team member from the Design department would then be in charge of packaging, and a team member from the Marketing department would have the edge in crafting a market strategy… you get the gist. Then great collaboration and teamwork come into play! And this is what would make this event great for the teams; it brings the people together in a way different from their everyday work: it creates new connections, it boosts creativity and interdepartmental connections, and after all - it is just a lot of fun! I wouldn't oversell if I said It was great! You could feel the buzz of creativity; it filled the room and from it a bunch of very cool ideas were born. Everyone was invested in getting their team to win; great projects were presented at the end. What a great group of folks that we welcomed for breakfast in SF last week; representing companies including Amplitude, Beacons, Braze, Fivetran, Front, Kong Inc., Notion, Reforge, Stitch Fix and more 🙌 Some of the key things I've learned after doing so many of these events are: - SO much learning for product people happens in small communities or peer groups; so much more so than "scaled" content (like newsletters, courses etc.) - So it's critical to build relationships with great people that you consider peers to continue learning and becoming a better product person / leader - People have been moving around a lot, especially during and after the pandemic, and so their traditional communities have been disrupted, and it's hard to create new ones with so few IRL events - Events like this often don't need an agenda or any formal content because there are great discussions happening in small groups; and a more informal setting makes it easier for folks to get around and not be stuck in a low-value conversation We're going to keep doing these "no agenda" informal events (with great food at cool spaces) for experienced product operators in more cities, so register your interest here: chameleon.io/events Thanks for the space 43.io and Dustin!
