Do you ever look back at where you started out in the working world? Inspired by friend and former colleague Glenda I'm doing just that, from the age of 16: 🏪 Checkout operator at ASDA - I need variety so I bothered my manager to let me work the kiosk, customer service desk and entrance as a Greeter - grainy evidence enclosed... 📞 Call centre operator for 118 118 - I made it through training and one week on the phones before returning to ASDA - the grass wasn't greener... 🛋️ Sales assistant at Habitat - I followed my best friend into the store and worked almost full time alongside studying for my degree. ⭕ Bingo caller at Castle Bingo - started by collecting coins but I craved the spotlight! 🦚 Stock allocator at Peacocks Stores Ltd. - my first officially full-time job out of university, again following my best friend into it. 🍻 Barperson at Brains pub Golden Cross and gay bar Eagle in Cardiff - moonlighting alongside the day job. 🦚 International marketing coordinator at Peacocks Stores Ltd. - my first foray into marketing, supporting franchisees across 26 countries, until recession and administration hit... 🍺 Retail marketing coordinator at Brains brewery and pub co - Beer? Really? But it ended up being the happiest I'd been at work to date, supporting the pub estate in a wonderful team. 🍺 Assistant brand manager at Brains brewery - following restructure and my foray into the brewing side of the business. I still loved it. 🍺 Cask ale development manager at Brains brewery - my first and only sales position, selling Brains beers into the English market. I no longer loved it, but I learned SO MUCH about communication. 🍺 Brand marketing manager (on-trade) at Wadworth brewery - back into brand, and still into beer. ☕ Communications manager at Loungers - followed another friend (Glenda) into this role that facilitated my relocation to Bristol and, for that reason, I'm so glad I did it. 🧑🏼🤝🧑🏼 Community marketing manager at Marstons pub co - the majority of which was spent in furlough... 🦷 Regional marketing manager at Bupa Dental Care - Dental? Really? But that's nothing like pubs and beer! But the timing was right, the team was right and now I've been here longer than any of those other individual roles. Switching sectors was scary, and I worried about the state of my CV with so much perceived job-hopping. But looking at it like this, I see the strength in it, from role to role, in leading me to where I am now. Yes, I crave variety, yes, I need stimulation, (and yes I now know I have ADHD, hello?!), and I'm getting it in good measure, I feel real good about my career. What was your first job? #CareerPath #FirstJob #MyCV

The job market in retail is interesting right now. Some observations from myself and my peers: - Specific experience is desired for category/product management roles. I.E I’m definitely viewed as a hard goods, “sports” buyer. - Senior category management roles (Above category management, below Merch dept. management) are few and far between. - Salaries are all over the show - Some companies simply want to fill roles and will pay the market minimum, some will pay for the “right” candidate. - Interview processes are dragged out and in some cases, roles axed as results are still poor. Anyway, here’s a picture of me in Marseille, France. Absolutely loving the fashion retail experience through Europe, particularly Barcelona and Milan.

So proud of my sister-in-law, Nicole Soares for making a decision about working and motherhood that feels right for her. I'm also sad that it takes this level of courage to share that message with a professional world that enjoys the optics of honoring women and motherhood when it's convenient (see: International Women's Day! Mother's Day! Every marketing campaign for a product geared towards Moms!) but falls short of implementing programs, policies and common sense flexibility that would go much further in actually supporting them and championing their rights. The change that could be brought about if we started honoring the duality of the burden AND privilege that is Motherhood and worked to make it possible for women to choose both in a way that didn't break them, would be the ultimate equity move. The answer is NOT better/more childcare, which only separates mothers and children more efficiently across more hours, leaving our mothers burnt out and our children disconnected. Rather, we should be rethinking what we prioritize as a society and taking a fresh approach to what work looks like and how we can provide a bridge to these women during what is essentially, a season (and perhaps the most impactful one, at that). We have a collective responsibility as a society to ensure a healthy, nurturing and connected upbringing for all children in which Mothers are as present as they'd like to be. I am in awe of all the Moms who have chosen this path while trying to keep themselves involved in the professional work that has also been an important part of their lives. *If you know of any professional/working Mothers in this situation who need guidance or support in thinking about how to navigate this tricky time, I offer informal and free of charge support/coaching on this topic/for women. Please feel free to share my information with them.*
My new boss is six months old and brings me so much joy! On what would have been my first week back to work after the birth of our daughter Hadley, I am instead sharing that I left my full-time position as Sales Marketing Manager at NBC & Telemundo CT. While bittersweet, this decision reflects my desire to prioritize raising Hadley and reimagine how work looks for me in this next chapter. I am incredibly grateful for my 10 years with NBCUniversal where I grew immensely personally and professionally! As a Marketing Coordinator I learned the ropes of media advertising and how the many pieces of this puzzle come together to help businesses reach audiences. I then joined the NBCU Sales Associate Program and was blown away by the platforms, scale and network of leaders that make this company a success. For the next five years, I was an Account Executive and worked with local businesses and national brands that taught me negotiation, organization, project management and ownership. I was humbled many times (especially as a sales person during COVID) and learned to have patience with myself and others in a rapidly changing industry. My last stop as Sales Marketing Manager was the most rewarding as I focused on growing and supporting my team and our sales reps. Although transitioning from doing to teaching was a change, I truly loved being a people manager. I am beyond thankful for each of these opportunities, as well as the supportive management and clients I’ve had the pleasure of working for and with. Being a mom and working doesn’t have to be a one-size-fits-all situation. I am excited for this next chapter with my family, while also exploring part-time and/or remote opportunities that continue my career in marketing and advertising. Keep me in mind if you see a role that I would be a good fit for and I look forward to sharing updates as they come! #fulltimemom #parttimework #grateful #marketing #advertising #newchapter

It's a reminder that the twists and turns in our professional lives can actually be blessings in disguise. Just look at the diverse skill set our author acquired through their eclectic career path. From FMCG to fashion, luxury travel to singing (yes, really!), each experience added a unique layer to their expertise. So, if you're feeling uncertain, remember, every step counts towards shaping your ultimate destination. Keep learning, keep growing, and who knows, your dream job might just be around the corner! #Growth #Motivation #MobileAppDevelopment #SoftwareDevelopment #ProductDevleopment
If you're feeling lost in your career... don't lose your hope just yet. I've had a non-linear journey when I started out. From FMCG to fashion and luxury travel - I've done them all. And it's probably the best thing I could've done. I learned so many different things in each of my previous roles, that are actively helping me do such a great job at Nude today. → Working in high-end retail: ✅ Customer service ✅ Attention to detail → Working in advertising agency ✅ Account management ✅ Creative thinking ✅ Internal collaboration → Working in FMCG brand management ✅ Trade marketing ✅ Budget management ✅ Top-level brand strategy → Working in Fashion wholesale ✅ Supplier relations and management ✅ Product management ✅ Product marketing → Working in Luxury Travel social media management ✅ All things social ✅ Video editing and design ✅ Client communication I might've even learned a thing or two in my short-lived career as a singer (I learned that being famous is stressful 😫) I'm grateful for all these experiences. Although I didn't think so at the time, all of these roles have paved the way to Nude being born. Learn as much as you can along the way ✨ even if it's not your final destination. It takes time to figure out what you really want or like. Not my usual type of post, but it's something I wish someone would have told me when I was worrying about my career.
