It’s #WorldOceansDay2024 tomorrow. So, let’s shine a light on a small plant with a huge role when it comes to ocean and #climate resilience: Seagrass. According to UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre seagrass meadows cover more than 300,000 km2 in at least 159 countries. They not only weaken storm surges, and store tremendous amounts of carbon. Seagrass ecosystems are biologically rich and highly productive, providing valuable nursery habitats to more than 20 per cent of the world’s largest 25 fisheries. They can filter pathogens, bacteria, and pollution out of seawater, and are home to species such as dugongs, seahorses, and sea turtles. But an estimated 7 per cent of seagrass habitat is being lost worldwide each year. (Source: https://lnkd.in/eAwWgaZb) From 2024 to 2026, ISPRA is running a major project to map coastal and marine habitats as part of the "Marine Ecosystem Restoration" (MER) project. Under the lead of Fugro, a consortium – including EOMAP - will map habitats of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa along the entire Italian coast. “The survey activities will (…) be conducted, using cutting-edge sensors, including LiDAR and airborne optical sensors, aerial gravimetry and satellite sensors, covering an area of 10,200 km2, multibeam technology and the use of an autonomous underwater vehicle for the direct observation of 4,000 kilometers of coast,” ISPRA and Fugro communicated. This approach is set to transform #conservation and #restoration efforts for marine ecosystems. Next to mapping and monitoring seagrass meadows we provide 🌱 spatio-temporal information which refers to seagrass and defines both its biomass build-up and health. 🌱 These include ongoing analysis on water clarity and eutrophication and seabed parameters (check eoapp AQUA to create and access advanced water quality analysis) 🌱 as well as sediment dynamics on the seabed (check eoapp SDB-Online to map and monitor shallow water bathymetry and its dynamic). Continental shelves (the shallow coastal seas around land masses) are vast. They are also the places where much of the planet's carbon stores are found. They also happen to be the areas where we most disturb the seabed, through human activities such as trawling, cable laying etc. What are we doing to those carbon stores and how might we be affecting the ocean's ability to help us mitigate climate change...
