Companies are going to have to train workers as too many are not coming into the workforce with the skills required. They will also need to be creative and flexible about how work is done. The Semiconductor Industry Association warns that the building boom could come with a labor shortage. More than half of the roughly 115,000 new positions expected to be created by the end of the decade could go unfilled, the group projects.” “Intel aims to be an exception. Cindi Harper, the company’s vice president of talent planning and acquisition, said it has experience building workforces at its facilities in Oregon, New Mexico and Arizona, and is following a similar playbook in Ohio.” “Intel has helped to design a training curriculum that will be offered at Ohio’s community colleges. The program, which in some cases can be completed in a year at a cost of about $3,700 before financial aid, familiarizes students with semiconductor manufacturing so they can become technicians, an entry-level job that involves maintaining and troubleshooting equipment at the highly automated plants.” #manufacturing #reshoring #laborshortage https://lnkd.in/g6umpC2w

Today's jobs report shows manufacturing shed another 8,000 jobs in June. The biggest hits were across machinery, plastics, electrical equipment, and fabricated metals. Manufacturers struggle with fill roles as retirements and turnover take their experience with them. These skills gap and loss of critical knowledge is impacting safety, quality, efficiency, and productivity. If we look for a ray of sunshine, we see that motor vehicles, food manufacturing, and paper and wood products all gained jobs. The challenge now is to onboard these new employees to safely and effectively complete their tasks. Unfortunately, many manufacturers struggle to get these newer employees up to speed, and half of new hires leave within the first 90 days. Manufacturing leaders must realize that there must be significant changes in order to compete and retain talent in the future. Technology can be a critical enabler to the changes. Connected Frontline Workforce #CFW solutions are just one of the newer best practices leaders have adopted to improve both time to productivity and effectiveness of training. Better still, it's enabling company's to leverage emerging technology such as #AI to the shop floor to enhance decision making. Newer workers aren't looking for a career, but the opportunity for meaningful work and the ability to gain transferable skills. Investing in what matters is critical for manufacturers to future-proof operations. LNS Research shows there are three strategic imperitives required for the Future of Industrial Work #FOIW: ➡ Knowledge management ➡ Connected frontline workforce applications ➡ Virtual operation centers Today's business landscape requires more flexibility than ever, and these strategic imperitives are critical to not just survive but thrive. Following the Future of Industrial Work framework is essential for creating strategy to build a future-proof frontline workforce.
