DIALOG’s Martin Nielsen and Mona Lemoine will be joined by fellow industry leaders, on Friday, May 17, at this year’s The Royal Architectural Institute Of Canada | L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada (RAIC) Conference on Architecture in Vancouver to deliver a thought-provoking presentation on unlocking accelerated action on climate change. This session, “RAIC Climate Action Plan – Supporting the Transformation of Practice,” will be moderated by Joanne Perdue and will feature Martin; Eladia Smoke, Smoke Architecture Inc.; and Michel Labrie, Local Practice Architecture + Design; who will share their insights and experiences with building a culture of design for climate and ecological health. The presenters will also discuss how their firms are developing leadership skills to accelerate positive change. Additionally, Mona will provide a brief overview of the RAIC’s draft Climate Action Plan, which was informed by a nationwide consultation with over 600 participants. Well done to Tayla Lindsey and Studio Pacific Architecture for taking a lead here. There is much confusion across the building sector on "WHAT" to report and "HOW" to report it, in the Sustainability field. LCA, BPIR, EPD. LBC, Greenstar/Homestar and Nabers, all feature in this space and as a manufacturer and supplier, we need to answers for ALL of them. Some information crosses over and in other cases can be very specific to a particular project. Having an advocate within the practice makes the information flow better, and helps the design teams ask for the right information from us.

Thank you Kara Thompson for this neat summary of the recent City Architecture Forum event on retrofit and reuse of buildings. As it says, the statistics I presented on "the state of the circular economy" were... depressing! Yes, the construction industry generates 62% of the UK's waste and 32% of all waste sent to landfill. Crucially, 13% of construction materials are diverted straight to waste without being used. What I want to spur on in our sector by baring the hard truths, is simply less talk and more action in this area. Such an uplifiting conclusion too : With a focus on circular economy practices, flexible design solutions, and proactive engagement with stakeholders, the possibilities for transformation are endless. It's time to dance to a new tune and create a built environment that not only meets our needs today but also ensures a sustainable future for generations to come. #CityofLondon #CircularEconomy #ReuseRevolution
