The proposal of SPRIND (German Agency for Disruptive Innovations) to license IP for virtual shares as a standard procedure for start-ups has not met with universal approval. How applicable is such a model to biotechnology start-ups, and can a one-size-fits-all approach really do away with defining market value and negotiating fair and reasonable IP terms? At bioX we have seen overleveraging can be problematic in biotech plant startups. Certain tests and activities are being gradually removed from the process, but these unleveraged tasks are still important. The removal or expedition of them leads to problems discovered in the CQV phase where documented resolution and retesting then needs to be done. While leveraging is beneficial, the importance of unleveraged tuning and optimization needs to be recognized and promoted. During my years of experience in biotech capital projects, I have learned a lot about what can make a successful start-up.
