I have a journalism degree and was taught that without freedom of the press, we have no democracy. Like it or not, long form (and for the fruit fly attention spans - short form) video + podcast from engaging, unfiltered, opinionated thinkers is the future - not media, not journalism. It will be biased. It will be polarizing. The best we can do? Teach children how to be critical thinkers. Teach children how to be kind. Teach children how to handle conflict and have difficult conversations. Teach children how to value all humans. Where do we have a playbook for this? Finland. It can be done.

💫 Here are the highlights from our conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Kaufman (~88 seconds) — given how people get news today, this conversation is timely and relevant. 🏆 Jonathan is a longtime journalist + author, currently the head of the journalism school at Northeastern University. Prior to this he held leadership roles at Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, overseeing global teams of journalists. Here were the top takeaways: 💡 The pace of journalism has dramatically increased, with speed and accuracy prioritized. Yet, the core principles—ethics, fairness, and in-person reporting—remain essential. 💡 Journalism helps us view the world through different lenses, bridging divides, fostering empathy, and promoting deeper understanding in a polarized world. 💡 In today’s fragmented media landscape, actively seeking out multiple perspectives is key to forming a well-rounded understanding of current events, beyond algorithms and echo chambers. 💡 Jonathan’s concerns about the disillusionment of young people are counterbalanced by his hope in their potential to reshape the world, given the right tools. 💡 His book Last Kings of Shanghai explores the intertwined histories of two Jewish dynasties in China and sheds light on issues of identity, colonialism, and their lasting impact on modern China. Working on mapping EU funding to support media and journalism is equally fascinating, frustrating and baffling. Fascinating to crunch all those numbers. Frustrating as the EU byzantine structures make it really difficult to identify only the projects specifically supporting journalism. Baffling because, as we move into the second stage of our project (of impact analysis), we find more and more odd trends (i.e., it seems that the more money EU spends on disinformation, the more disinformation we have and the more prominent the phenomenon becomes). Here is a first report in our Media and Journalism Research Center EU funding in the media project. It's been a pleasure working with the diligent Nikolas Schäfer who led on the data collection and analysis. More to come in the following year as our work aimed at mapping finances in the media keeps expanding. #EU #media #funding #financing #mapping #research #EUgrants
We are excited to announce a new study by our director, Marius Dragomir, and researcher Nikolas Schäfer, examining the impact of EU funds on Europe’s media and journalism. Released today, this report is part of the Mapping of EU Spending on Media Project, initiated by the Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC) in 2023. Through interviews with EU grantees and empirical research based on data on specific areas of EU fund allocation, the project seeks to answer a critical question: what effect does EU funding have on the European news media landscape?
